And on Viewliner sleepers, they will have their own windows.

Has anyone gotten refund in voucher and then added to another reservat

We just had similar situation. Last year we booked coach tickets from NOL to LFT to bring some of the grandkids on a train ride. We used a voucher from a previous trip - problems with Crescent, Amtrak give us a $90 voucher. We had logistical problems, and had to put our trip on hold...

    rental cars

We've gotten the best rates using National at the airport location. That's all they have in Lafayette. They're not a big fish, nat everywhere, but they do have low rates.

    Dallas to Los Angeles

Then there's the annual talk about TE "absorbing" the Sunset. Sunset going daily New Orleans to San Antonio, coach only, and the TE going daily Chicago to Los Angeles. That would make 2 daily trains going to the same destination, using almost the same routes. Maybe they could race ????

    Track Error Detection Interference?

Another possibility is the FRED -the telemetry device at the end of train. When we are using our scanner up in Texas to monitor KCS traffic, we get the screetching of the FRED's on a regular basis. Not sure if Amtrak uses the same system. Telemetry devices make screetching noises.

Taking the laptop in a roomette

We've on both the City New Orleans and Crescent, with laptops (2) and camera equipment in bedroom (CONO) and roomette (CR). Never had ANY problems with anyone coming into the room, or anything missing.

    solo/Is it Safe

While we've not done a solo trip in many years, you would be perfectly safe. As others have said, where would a molester/thief/bad guy go. The conductor/asst conductor and service attendant are always giong back and forth in coach. As for sleeper, that's even safer. You have a door to...

People Who Regularly Wave at Trains

As railfans, we ALWAYS wave, first to the engineer/asst engineer, and continue waving as a passenger train passes. Sometimes you can see some of the people onboard waving back. When we are passengers, we do the same, when passing through towns or when we see people trackside, we wave to...

Kids, coach and a long ride

It's all in attitude. We took our grandkids from New Orleans to Philadelphia back in 2007. Ages from 15, 13, 9 year old twins, and a 5 year old girl. We took coach, because of price, 3 adults and 5 kids that would have been way too pricey. And we took everything to entertain them - lots of...

    Today's eastbound Sunset

Having lived in Lafayette, Louisiana for a number of years, we've seen UP leading #1 many times. Lately they have been maintaining a good schedule, but we've seen #1 as late as 27 hours in the past. Thank heavens it is a 3 times a week train.

    Southbound CNO diner on fire

Actually they're not "unmarked" crossings. The crossings are protected by "crossbucks" Signs in an "X" pattern that display the words "Railroad Crossing" Many also have "Stop" of "Yield" signs. State laws state that motor vehicles must yield to trains at these "intersections" as trains...

We second the nomination, and add spending a few hours in the Magnolia Room in New Orleans

Amtrak train hits truck in Lousianna 5/31

An incident a few years ago, about 5 miles east of Sunday's incident. In 2003, Hurricane Lily hit SW Louisiana and power was out for several days in a large area. A company in New Iberia supplied generators to many businesses, made a lot of money. Manager of the company owned a nice BMW. One...

Amtrak train hits truck in Lousianna 5/31

We were contacted by a DOT employee that we know, requesting additional photos, which we do have. He did not request us not to publish them. We know that there will be lawsuits coming out of this incident. We are supplying the photos to this agency only for their investigative purposes. Not...

Amtrak train hits truck in Lousianna 5/31

Not wishing to contribute to an arguement, we passed the scene about 2 hours after the incident, the train still at a dead stop. Arrrgh HAS the correct location, the crossing between LA 92 and Captain Cade Road. Venture forth suggests the Captain Cade Road crossing, which has an active...

    One Terrific Trip

Sounds like you had a good trip, helps to be a former railroad employee. It's a shame Amtrak is not upgrading the food, guess that's a done deal already though. More varied menu is nice, we had alternate foods back our April trip on the Crescent, don't remember what it was. We found the NS...

Cell Phone Service on Sunset Limited

Should have no problem through Louisiana. There are cell phone towers everywhere. We go from Lafayette to New Orleans frequently, US 90 parallels Sunset route for most of the way.

    ideas

Congratulations to you for requesting input as to how to serve better !!!! Many good ideas have been brought forth, the only thing that we can add is for us, the revenue passenger, to communicate to Amtrak via telephone, snail mail, feedback form, or personal e-mail your personal experience...

    Another new SL proposal

Why not turn the TE westward from Ft Worth, following the old T&R route to El Paso, joining with the Sunset, let the Sunset go on it's own on it's present route. Don't think that the TE picks up many passengers from San Antonio to Dallas.

    Magnolia Room in New Orleans

Point well taken about other cities NOT having a private waiting room. We don't think we're asking for staffing, or even computer work stations, just a larger waiting area !!!! And fresh coffee, come on....this is NEW ORLEANS !!! In answer to the question, YES, they do come and get you a...
