    What is a flag stop?

When I was young Culpeper, VA was a flag stop for the C&O and a regular stop for the Southern. When someone was there to board a C&O train, the ticket agent had a green flag on a stick which was shoved into a holed which was bored into a pole adjacent to the track. I always assumed that was...

Los Angeles Union Station to get air conditioning

A few years ago I spent a few hours in LAX to make a connection. It was one of those days that I guess LA rarely sees - well over 100. I never could find a place that was comfortable.

    Denver to Roseville June 2015

Those orange colored arrows you see on the timetable denote those stations without an arrival and departure time. For example Denver depicts that the train arrives at X time and departs at Y time. The other stations simply list one time. That means that the train will only stop at that...

Smartphone apps for Amtrak.host RR radio frequencies?

I have an app, but it's probably useless for someone wanting to listen to the radio traffic to and from their train. What is going on is that a person who lives near a track will set up a scanner to pick up the radio traffic in their area. They then stream the radio traffic over the...

I don't know how much they would use it, but Clovis is home to Cannon AFB.

    room availability oddity question

I tried what you indicated in your post. I don't know what was going on, but now Amtrak is only showing rooms on the CHI DEN leg of the trip

    Auto Train 11/2

On Saturday Nov 1, 53 went through Folkston, GA with 3 locomotives on the front. A short time later 91 came through with only one locomotive. Yesterday morning, Nov 2, about 10 am, I saw 52 crossing the James River Bridge at approximately 10-15 mph. I don't know if these events are connected.

    Rough Tracks

I agree with the comments and silvers. I am a very sound sleeper so most times very little wakes me up. One time on the SWC in Kansas, we hit a stretch that shook so hard that for a few seconds I thought we were leaving the rails. Another time on the SS northbound I was up early and chatting...

    Upgrades

The on board reduced price upgrade is no longer done. They charge whatever the room is going for at the moment.

    Wireless internet: long-term trains

In today's environment of cost cutting due to not enough money to go around, I would rather see Amtrak spend their limited dollars on amenities which are impossible or very difficult the customer to provide themselves. I am already connected as are the vast majority of people.

What brought YOU to long distance train travel?

In 1966 as a poor young man in Chicago I wanted to get home to Virginia for Christmas. I couldn't afford a plane so I took the B&O Capitol Ltd both ways.

    Checking Luggage?

I've checked baggage from Richmond, VA to Oceanside, CA and did the same on the return trip to VA. I had no problems. On the return trip my checked baggage took a different routing than I did. Additionally, a situation arose which delayed our departure from CHI by almost 24 hours. When I got to...

Best day trip from FBG? RVM or WBG

At RVM you are at the bottom of what the locals call Broad Street Hill. Attractions such as St John's Church, the Capitol, Museum of the Confederacy, "White House" of the Confederacy are all uphill. I live here and wouldn't want to make those walks with bags and stroller. If you are coming on a...

    Scanning tickets at NYP

RVR - BOS is a fairly common trip for me. I get checked at RVR, WAS, and NYP northbound and the reverse southbound. I don't always ride 66/67; however, on my most recent trip I took 67 back to RVR. As we left BOS, they announced that we would be rechecked at NYP. On one of my trips I asked...

    Trackside attractions

What you saw is the Castle Air Museum, one of the largest outdoor air museums in the west. It is adjacent to the now closed Castle AFB. It apparently has over 50 aircraft on display there.

My NEC baggage odyssey - the tale begins

Over the holidays I had a similar situation. I was returning to RVR from BOS on 67. I got to the station several hours early and checked a bag. About 15 minutes prior to departure they announced that people with checked baggage on 67 should report to the area out by the platforms. They...
