    Empire Builder flood disruptions

Any news about tomorrow (4/15)? I'm supposed to go from SEA to WFH. That's way too far for a bus ride.

Can't believe what an AGR rep told me.

I had a similar situation last week. I had an AGR bedroom reward round trip from Edmonds, WA to East Glacier. A few days before the trip I called AGR to see if we could get on and off at Everett, WA, the next stop after Edmonds. The agent said she would have to book a new reservation then cancel...

    Getting Off The Train Early

If you're getting off at Williams Junction, make arrangements ahead of time for someone to pick you up. Williams Jct. is a clearing in the forest miles from anywhere. There are lots of dirt roads leading out, and no signs. If you try to walk out, you are guaranteed to get lost. If you are...

Whitefish, MT - Throw out ideas!

The Lodge at Whitefish Lake is a great place to stay. It's not cheap, but it's a beautiful lodge right on the lake. It also has a very good restaurant called the Boat House. Their chipotle ribs will make the whole trip worthwhile. There's a very good Italian restaurant called Ciao Mambo which...

    Couple of questions

I've done this before. When you book the sleeper with AGR, make sure the room is available for the whole trip. Then as soon as it's booked, get the room and car numbers and have the AGR agent connect you to a regular Amtrak agent. This gives you the best chance of getting the same room for the...

How to get to the Grand Canyon ?

Williams Junction is just a clearing in the forest, a long way from any civilization. If you're getting off at Williams Junction, make sure you have a ride arranged. There is no line of taxis waiting for passengers. As far as I know, the only transportation that shows up regularly is the shuttle...

    CS OTP

Amtrak recently updated their train status display to include both the arrival and departure times. In the process, they seem to have messed up the delay calculation. It appears that what they are showing is the is the departure delay, not the arrival delay.

Anyone Recently Back from a trip on the Empire Builder?

In the last 10 years, I have travelled over 90,000 miles on Amtrak, mostly on the Starlight, but also on the Empire Builder, Southwest Chief, Lake Shore Limited, Capital Limited, Cardinal, Crescent, and Surfliner. In that time, there are three room attendants who stand out as being in the wrong...

    Favorite carry-on bag for gear?

Both eBags and Magellan's Travel Supplies are part of AGR's Points for Shopping, so it might be worth your while to check them out before you buy. eBags rewards 6 points per dollar and Magellan rewards 7 points per dollar. I've been using a rolling duffel from eBags for years. I just got...

What is the best GPS to have on Amtrak trips?

In another thread about GPS I made a post saying that on my Garmin Nuvi 350, I had to go into Navigation Settings and tell it that I was going off road. This is what keeps the display from jumping to the nearest road. I also mentioned that I usually tell it I'm on a bus but I don't know if...

Will my GPS (bought for the car) work on the train?

We use our Nuvi 350 on the train all the time. As mentioned earlier, you have to tell it you are going off road. I also tell it we're on a bus. I don't know if that is necessary, but it always works when I do that. We have to keep it near the window until it acquires the satellites, but then we...

When to get to the station

I'm pretty sure the Coast Starlight leaves at 10:15 am, not 10:45. The last few times that I've boarded at LAX we had to go through a security check-in before we could get in line. We usually get there plenty early, so the check-in line isn't very long, but I've seen it get pretty long closer...

    Amtrak "Contact Us" web form

I emailed them through the "Contact Us" form yesterday afternoon about the "Review your profile" email that has been discussed here. I got the automated response almost immediately and this morning there was an email from Amtrak Customer Service waiting in my inbox answering my question. The...

    Hotel Courtesy Van

The Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams, AZ and The Lodge at Whitefish Lake in, um, Whitefish, MT both have shuttles. In fact, if you don't catch the shuttle at the Williams Jct. "station" your chances of ever seeing civilization again are rather slim.

pre-register for the new agr card if you haven't

I got the same letter yesterday. I've already received all my bonus points and purchase points from the first statement so I don't think the lack of a member number on the card will affect the rewarding of points.
