First timer, not impressed with Amtrak

Ripping on people because they don't like something as much as they apparently should is a weakness of this board; however, many people here did craft their responses well.

    Q: about LSL Eastbound...

The abandoned industrial hulks along the tracks on that route are quite interesting also.

    car rental Amtrak San Antonio

I've rented several times from the Enterprise on S. St. Marys Street. They always picked me up from my hotel in the morning and for an evening return it was an easy walk to the hotel. I would set a pickup time the day prior, otherwise, you may end up waiting a bit. The staff there has always...

    Train Shed Upgrade for Milwaukee

It's pretty dark. The tunnels still have some vintage direction signs. With regard to my comment on another thread about lack of ZipCars at the station, I missed this two-day old article where they were recently installed...

    Train Shed Upgrade for Milwaukee

    Per the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. http://www.jsonline.com/news/milwaukee/all-aboard-milwaukees-intermodal-station-due-for-upgrade-b9985161z1-221629401.html

    Could This Save Amtrak?

The City of Milwaukee recently entered into a contract with ZipCar. The downtown intermodal station, which gets 16 trains and multiple buses per day, was not one of the sites selected by the city for ZipCar service. Seems short-sighted by the city.

Advice/Travel Checklist for First Time LD Rider

I have never had to use duct tape. If you feel inclined to bring some, wrap a small amount around something small and compact. No one needs to bring a whole roll. Do bring handiwipes to clean up the room if you need to. I always wipe down the table when I get on board. It is one night. Do...

Big Trip Planning - Advice Solicited

The Texas Eagle doesn't travel any faster between Dwight and Pontiac, IL, than it does on the rest of the route. The D-P leg is the only part of the route ready for fast trains and it doesn't run that all that often. It's not a bad route to take, but don't take it if you expect to go fast.

beds normally made during dinner? seems early

I usually take trains that have an extended stop between 9 and 11. They make the bed when I am out stretching my legs. Never been approached about making up the bed while at dinner. I always put away the bed in the morning since we usually need the room for us to get ready. I also have no...

meals included in bedroom, are all entrees free regardless of price?

Those Texas Eagles ribs are indeed good. I tried the chili braised beef short ribs on a recent Empire Builder trip. Clearly a different recipe and quite horrible.

meals included in bedroom, are all entrees free regardless of price?

Depends on who is serving you. On a recent Empire Builder trip, the serve on one end of the diner said ice cream was not included, but the next meal on the other side with a different server, it was included. I didn't order in either case, other guests did. The guest who was refused was as...

filthy restrooms/showers on almost all Amtrak trains I've been on

I've been on sleepers with filthy bathrooms and folks with bad BO and on coaches where everything was spic and span -- a stereotype of upper crusties on the sleepers and rabble in coach is a poor way to approach the topic. However, simple passenger math and the fact that an SCA has more of a...

Amtrak talking about Empire Builder expansion

If you type in a certain combination of Ws, Gs and Os you can find out some stuff too. But here is the partisan position from the other perspective. http://www.maciverinstitute.com/2010/10/citizens-guide-to-high-speed-rail-construction-debate-2/

Amtrak talking about Empire Builder expansion

There have been some very bad rail projects pushed in Wisconsin that have poisoned the well coupled with some other very bad policy decisions by the same politicians pushing for the rail projects. Outlandish project studies that claim in effect that eleventy gigillion people will ride and it...

Amtrak talking about Empire Builder expansion

Jim Rowen is an ardent partisan. Take his viewpoint for what it's worth, which isn't much because he leaves out how Madison was making the original project much more costly and time-consuming than the original proposal.

Amtrak talking about Empire Builder expansion

My experience in the transportation industry is that road builders know how to design and build train tracks too. If it's infrastructure, they will design and build it. Pork = the other guy's pet project.

Amtrak talking about Empire Builder expansion

The decision to rebuild I-94 in Kenosha and Racine counties was initiated under the Jim Doyle administration. If you drive that chunk of road regularly, you will understand why its being rebuilt -- 70 year old roadbed and dangerously antiquated scissors type interchanges. The project was...

Amtrak talking about Empire Builder expansion

The train situation in Wisconsin was polluted with Gov Jim Doyle handed out no-bid contracts for Talgo trainsets and tried to lock the project into place before the 2010 election. The proposed Milw-Madison section of HSR, which was to be the opening segment of a CHI-MSP line was sold to Madison...

Amtrak talking about Empire Builder expansion

It's called negotiation and knowing the hand you are dealt and how to play that hand. Swinging through Iowa requires Iowa to play. Traveling through WI without any stops will cause WisDOT to basically hold up any improvement to the tracks. Continuing through WI may mean that MN pays for the...
