    Pacific Parlor Car

Hello, all. It's been a while since I've been on this page but DW and I are taking the CS (LAX - SEA) in July.  We've been on this train a few times before and we're pretty sure what to expect.  But... The last time we were on the train (3+ years ago) we were told that the Parlor Car was being...

Is The Eclipse A Missed Opportunity For Amtrak?

Has there been a posting/forum, etc. regarding this eclipse and Amtrak. There are two lines (that I know of) that cross the track of totality (Coast Starlight and City of New Orleans). Are any of those planning to intercept the eclipse. Are there any specialty trains going. I've made my...

    Experiences on The Adirondak please

(correction) My trip to NYC was on the LSL via the EB. Poo on the no dome car thing. I wasn't expecting one until I saw some You Tube videos. Notwithstanding that, it will be an excellent ride,

    Experiences on The Adirondak please

Thanks all for your comments. We've done the EB before and were on the correct side of the train for the Hudson so if we cannot change seats, we'll be fine. In general, the Adirondack appears to be similar to the Cascades so I don't expect too many surprises. I'll keep checkin this forum for...

    Experiences on The Adirondak please

Hello all: We are planning a trip from Montreal to NYC in June. I'm looking for notes, feedback and general observations on your Adirondak experience. We plan on taking business class. Skyguy

    Boarding in Oakland

We'll be boarding the CS tomorrow (October 20) at 9:39. We have a bedroom. Will the dining room be open for us? TNX Mr.Astro

    Redcap Service in Chicago

We pulled up in a taxi a few years back with lots of luggage. I sought out a red cap and he was spectacular. He took our luggage, placed it on a gator (hefty golf cart), waited while we did our check-ins and took care of our checked luggage, drove us right to the door of our car. The best $20...

Stopping the Coast Starlight for Vandenberg A.F.B. activities

VAB was, for the most part, re-engeneered to service the Shuttle but there were too many obstacles to overcome including, but not limited to, the incessant fog; engineers could not see or video all aspects of the launch, and to comply with flight regulations there must be an abort to land...

Stopping the Coast Starlight for Vandenberg A.F.B. activities

Has the CS ever been stopped for rocket launches (or etc.)? If so, what have been your experiences, did you see a launch? I was lucky enough to see a Space Shuttle launch and since I'll b e on the CS in the near future, I was wondering what might the chances be of seeing a launch. If that...

    Cascades schedule

The source was on a cruising form I follow (the chat line was about taking trains to Vancouver from Seattle). One respondent said that in 2015 there would be only one train out of Seattle. I doubted that info and so here I am (again) seeking a more qualified answer.

    Chicago Union Station

Last year, on our way to NYP, we tried to peek into the Grand Hall but it was occupied for a fancy dress reception. A good use for the space. On our way back we went in and saw it in all its' grandure. Skyguy

    Choices, choices, choices

Never too much but cash and time would be the deciding factor. I also forgot to mention that, although we could depart from LAX or EMY/OAK, we are actually leaving from Vancouver, Canada via the Cascades then the Starlight or to LAX on a repo cruise in the fall. :hi:

    Choices, choices, choices

We are thinking about our next Amtrak trip (absolutely fantastic and well worth the effort and money!). Last spring we went to NYC from SEA return on the EB and the LSL. Last autumn we went from LAX to SEA on the CS(a terrific trip but too short, Vandenburg AFB was a treat). We want to go...

    alcohol transport

Yes, they do have a 'reception' in the dining car as the train waits in the station for departure but they close up shop shortly after pulling out because the staffs' shifts end. It was a lot of fun. There was, however, no similar reception from NYP on the way back.

Four hour layover in CHI - what to do?

Yes on the taxi but at Michigan you can walk to The Goat on Lower Whacker for an interesting bit of true Chicago (think Saturday Night Live: the Cheeburger, Cheeburger, Cheeburger skit)

    Hat Etiquette

I'm a wearer of your style and am rarely found outdoors without a hat on my head but I don't wear one on the train mostly because there's no convenient place to put it where it won't get damaged or soiled. On the other hand, I see baseball caps worn all over the train. "Every girl's crazy...

    First Time

I used 'peg' because my mother, a Scot, called them that. Pin(s) would be the term in the US.

    California Starlight sold my roomette

Perhaps I did not make myself clear. The Santa Cruz pax was going all the way to Seattle.

    First Time

I just returned from a CS experience. We had a roomette but were rubbernecking the rooms and room E is slightly roomy-er than the others, but only because the door to the toilet is positioned differently. Any room is a great room. Our trip to CHI on the EB last year found us in room A and we...
