Assume I get in to CHI on the #8 after the Cardinal has left. Roomette booked all the way to CVS. They offer me coach space via #30 the next evening and a regional to CVS. By when do I have to say "no thanks" and still get a full refund (not just a voucher) for the CHI/CVS rail and sleeper fare?

I don't know how tight your connx. is but once we came in on a very late TE and missed the Cardinal along with a few other folks by about 2 hours. We were met at the train and escorted to a waiting van that took us and our bags to Indianapolis where we actually had to wait for the Card. to arrive. That was on a trip that happened to coincide with the Great Dome on the Cardinal. We not only caught our train, experienced the dome and we had David as our SCA who was a great guy that provided excellent service. Was very happy we caught our train!

Found it on Amtrak site which was easier to navigate than I expected. Full credit up until scheduled time of departure.

Checked roomettes on #14 just now and there seem to be lots available over the next few weeks, so I think my trip back west will be #51, #3, #14. My worry was the LAX connection but #3 does pretty well and at worst it looks like a roomette would still be available on the next day's train. SWC is the only e-w route I haven't ever been on so I'm looking forward to it.
