Anyone thinking that this place is overmoderated should go browse the railroad.net forums for a few weeks.
This place looks like a kindergarden playground compared to that ridiculously heavily moderated place.
So, it's cool to bash other railroad forums here?
I do not think Ryan is bashing another forum, just providing a fact.
Fact? This form is like kindergarten is what he said.
Ryan was not bashing another forum. He was providing a fact that AU is much more liberal in our policies.

Correct.

Not bashing this one either, btw.

Two difference styles, catering to two different audiences.

Obviously, I prefer the staff here.

If this is still too heavily handed, somewhere like 4chan may be more to your liking.

Aloha

While much of this thread is annoying to me I was commenting about several messages that refereed to striking children and suggesting illegal acts (Sneaking booze in a hip flask) in coach.

Ah yes, but you deleted that post, why even mention it? :)

It's all good. This is a nice place but the managers just refuse to give specifics about what gets a thread or post deleted. So we have to guess. I guess. That's fine. See you in the observation car!

Seems to me that this thread is long past it's prime & should either be locked, or people just stop posting to it and let it slide into oblivion ... until someone reopens it 4 years from now ("Why was I kicked off the train in no-man's land because I was drinking from my flask in coach?")

:p

I asked for this thread to be deleted 8 hours ago. Right here in this thread. Only my request was deleted. Ha!

AU is one of the most liberal forums on the entire Internet. Even if I was not a moderator, I would be proud to be an AU member and to be allowed to post without going thru many channels for approval for your post to appear 3 days later.
Meanwhile I belong to another forum that is way more anything goes. There are thousands of users that used to be on thenest dot com but then they changed their forum software and were really just awful, so one user just made her own board at proboards. Now the forum is flourishing and is really not moderated at all.

In any case, I personally don't like traveling with children. I would gladly pay extra for an adults only car on amtrak or on any sort of transportation. I have mentioned before that I am child-free by choice. Frankly I would rather ride in a car full of dogs than with children. But that is the beauty of this country - it takes all kinds.

Someone asking for something to be deleted doesn't mean that it's automatically deleted.
The moderators run the asylum, not the inmates.
It's fine. It's just the unevenness of the moderation that bugs.

Just a question. How about a post stating that several posts have been deleted for < insert reason > just so people understand and don't go nuts trying to figure it out. I didn't realize some posts had been deleted and was trying to figure out what was wrong with the past several posts ( not knowing they had been deleted ) well, I hope you get my thought before THIS gets too confusing

IMHO, this thread seems to be a molehill that's becoming a mountain. The fact that the OP mentioned bratty kids may be a little loaded, but good grief. It's not THAT bad.

I taught for 25 years and enjoy children (most of the time!), but some kids DO act bratty at times. He's entitled to post his opinion and ask a relevant question about it.

Sometimes one part of a post, especially if by a newbie, seems to be criticized out of proportion. I'm not understanding why this thread needs to be deleted, or why the mods are coming under fire. I haven't read every single word so maybe I overlooked some important factor. My bad if so.

The OP seems to want some peace and quiet, and is asking what he may expect. That seems rather mild to me.

Exactly. Can you please give some reasons?

Thanks for saying I'm going nuts. That wasn't very nice. In fact it was insulting. Do you say that to strangers on the train?

While I really like it here I can assure you that AU is not close to being one of the most liberal forums on all of the interwebs.

Their users may not be the most liberal minded people but just about any vehicle forum is far more lenient/liberal in their posting policies than AU.

I agree with this post wholeheartedly!

You are 99% correct. The 1% disagreement comes from my thinking that the OP could have phrased the question and his comments in a much less hostile way.

When posts get deleted, the mods are pretty good about doing a complete job such that you would never know they were there (other posts referencing the deleted material, etc). When I've had posts deleted (or edited on my behalf) either due to my own malfeasance or cleaning up after someone else's, the mods have always been good about contacting me privately and explaining their actions.

Outside that, they don't really owe a public explanation. Without people mentioning "HAY GUYZ OMG DELETED POSTS AND THREADS!!!" you'd never know they were there.

Exactly. Can you please give some reasons?
He did.

"striking children and suggesting illegal acts (Sneaking booze in a hip flask) in coach"

In addition, it's pretty obvious that things like personal attacks, name calling, spam, porn, etc are going to go. If you're talking politics it's going to go (clearly published rule).

The rules aren't a mystery.

Okay here I am again- the OP and I would like to say a few things:

1. I am sorry if I offended anyone by referring to children as brats. Not all children are brats- and kids as a whole donnot deserve this distinction. I was just asking if children are audibly loud if I'm in my Roomette. For anyone I offended or anyone who mistook my question as ignorance, I apologize. I am truly not a jerk, nor am I someone who is anti-social. I am just trying to take a trip away from it all, and want a little solitude. I actually don't mind track noise or whistles- that's part of a train's mechanism. I do however, get a little irritable if I hear crying that won't stop for hours at a time. Yes it's a gamble on who will be traveling with me, which is why I was asking about how much of the noise you hear if your door is closed.

2. I don't mind eating in the dining car at all- it's a way to escape closed quarters. However this is a 2 1/2 day trip- a few meals I might wish to have be brought to my room, so I was inquiring about if that was possible. I don't mind talking to strangers, but again- I talk to people for a living, and this trip is letting me get away from everything; allotting me some alone time. I'm even silencing my phone calls from friends and family, unless an emergency.

I really wasn't trying to give the impression I was being a jerk. I am not- so sorry again for offending anyone.

"Sneaking Booze in a Hip Flask In Coach" is my new forum name.

Is that so wrong?

It's best this thread should not vanish as tens more would arise with the same questions.

MAY WE HAVE ANTHONY ADDRESS US? PLEASE?

It's way past time.

Thanks!

Dude - don't worry. It's not about you any more. This thread has taken a life of it's own and we're just having fun with it.

However, if you're worried about what might happen to disturb the peace of your roomette, annoying adult behavior is far more likely to be it than screaming or crying children. One of the reasons why I've kept at it is that you always seemed to go back to the "crying brats" line of thinking rather than acknowledging that adults are likely to be a greater problem. I mean, there's always the chance that the passenger next to you is like the woman who got put off the Coast Starlight after talking almost 16 hours straight. To me that would be far more annoying than kids crying. I deal with my kid crying on a regular basis, and frankly I'm a bit numb to it already - I've already developed psychological anesthesia.

As far as children are concerned let's think about it. Were we all perfect children all the time when we were growing up? We must be tolerant of all of our fellow travelers, be they 8 months or 98 years old!

And just to wrap up did you know that having children is hereditary, if your parents did not have any chances are that you won't either.
