I just got back from attending the 2010 Wisconsin State Fair and they had some DOT and Amtrak folks there talking about the new train shed that is going to be built at the Milwaukee Depot in the next couple of years... It will match the new depot quite nice. They also released some of the sketches... Check them out!!

This is what the train shed looks like now:

Thanks for sharing that. I hadn't planned on going to State Fair this year, so I would have missed it.

Looks like a nice ped bridge to watch the trains come and go, if they're going to let passengers out there before the train arrives. But alas, they don't let us out to the platform early now, so I'm doubting they will after this is built. Looks nice.

FINALLY! It looks like we're starting to move toward the open and airy European-style trainsheds! If only this momentum can continue to build!

I find the third picture a bit humorous, with what appears to be a consist of Phase III Hi-Level cars, plus a banner advertising the Sunset Limited Orlando to Los Angeles service.

I noticed the banner as well and was a bit puzzled. But since it was a sketch I just figured that liberties were taken and they thought no one would notice, except for those like us  !

So I've seen drawings for Milwaukee & Madison. When will we find out what the Talgos look like (like paint schems, fins & F59PHIS or not?)?

Ah, didn't attend the state fair at all this year (but I was out riding trains instead, so I guess it's OK). Did you see anything with a timeline attached? And if funding had been secured and committed yet?

The DOT folks there said the first train sets (2 of them) would roll out sometime in 2012. The rest would come out during 2013. The train line between MKE-MAD will open sometime in 2013, however it might be 2014 or 2015 before it's totally high speed.

The funding has been secured, the contracts with Talgo signed, and the trains are being constructed in Spain right now.

Sorry, I should have been clearer. I was wondering if there was a timeframe attached to the MKE trainshed work.

Thanks for the info about the Talgos, though.

I haven't heard officially, but last I heard was 2011-2013 was the target period.
Thanks. I'll have to check WisDOT's website again and watch more closely in the coming months. The renovations of the terminal a few years ago were a nice start, but the station could still use some work. (Frankly, I think the terminal area could use some minor improvements/changes still as well.)

And now there's a short article about this project.

http://www.biztimes.com/realestateweekly/2010/8/18/dot-to-build-new-train-shed-at-milwaukee-intermodal-station

It mentions a meeting on Tuesday, August 24, at Milwaukee Intermodal Station that will have more information. Unfortunately, work will prevent me from attending.
