rtabern - when you took the amtrak bus from emy to Pier 39 how did you get to your hotel. Did you take a taxi or did you walk with all your luggage?

PM me closer to the date and remind me... and maybe we can figure a time to meet up... either at CUS for train day or on #7.

On the morning of 7 May, I am arriving Chi on the CONO. Will be on the EB with you that afternoon. Hope we can shake hands.

It's no surprise that Robert developed a deep love for train travel and Amtrak. After all, his father, Thomas, grew up in Lake Bluff, Illinois along the Chicago & Northwestern's main line between Chicago and the Twin Cities. His mother, Rita, grew up along the very busy "Evanston Express" CTA train line in Evanston, Illinois.

Robert was born in August 1979 in the northern suburbs of Chicago and spent his younger years living in Skokie, Morton Grove and Northbrook, Illinois. Growing up, Robert loved to ride Metra trains with his mother on the weekends. It was at Glenbrook North High School in Northbrook, IL that Robert discovered his other passion, broadcast communications.

In 1997, Robert moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas to attend college at Arkansas State University. For awhile, he had an apartment directly across from the Walnut Ridge, AR Amtrak depot where he would watch the Texas Eagle come and go in the wee hours of the morning. During college, Robert was on-air talent at KDRS/KLQZ (two independent radio stations in Paragould, AR), KASU (NPR's affiliate in Jonesboro, AR), as well as a producer at KAIT, the ABC-TV affiliate in Jonesboro, AR. Robert graduated from Arkansas State University in December 2001 with a B.S. in Broadcast Communications and a minor in Political Science. For a little over a year, Robert worked as the morning news producer at WKJG, the NBC-TV affiliate in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

In February 2003, Robert moved to the south suburbs of Milwaukee, Wisconsin and began working for WDJT, the CBS-TV affiliate in Milwaukee. For most of his time there, Robert was the senior producer of the station's 2-hour long morning newscast called "The CBS 58 Morning News Express". In mid-2009, Robert decided to put his communication skills to use in a different setting, leaving television news and taking a position as a Emergency Services Dispatcher with the Oak Creek, WI Police Department.

When not at work, you can often find Robert riding the rails. He often spends almost all of his vacation time each year riding Amtrak around the country... as well as doing shorter day trips around Illinois on his days off. Robert also enjoys narrating for train passengers. Between March 2007 and September 2010, he was a volunteer with the Chicago-based Trails & Rails group, which provided an interperative program in the Sightseer Lounge on the Empire Builder between Chicago, Illinois and St. Paul, Minnesota. In October 2010, Robert left Trails & Rails when the group was disbanded and became the official narrator for the Friend of the 261 based in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Friend of the 261 is run by Steve Sandburg and provides a number of excursions every year around the Midwest using the ex-Milwaukee Road steam engine 261.

Besides trains, Robert also loves to take driving trips and perfecting his craft at photography. He also enjoys hiking and visiting various state and national parks.
