I think they normally supply those little pouches, but they do not always give them out. We took our own as well.

We just did the Eastbound Portland to Chicago. Even though it was Early October, we still saw a quite a bit on the Columbia. The other part we enjoyed was along the Mississippi between St. Paul and LaCrosse.

I agree with Mike, If you are getting off at Denver, take the Empire Builder instead for the the Mississippi River Views. If you are getting off at Salt Lake City, take the Zephyr.

Yes. The engines have an Event Recorder. It would record the speed and any use of the Horn on the train. The use of the horn is not automatic, as some communities have Anti-whistiling by laws and the horn is not used at some designated crossings. (At least that is true in Canada)

I believe that is because the maps run off the Amtrak information extract, and as soon as you get a reroute, Amtrak just presents the entire train as a Service Disruption. (This is how it appears if you look up the Status on the Amtrak site)

What is the full routing of the detour. Does it stay on the other route until Ellinor or Newton on the East End?
