Traveling to Atlantic City from NYC (via Philly)

I'm heading on a day trip from Penn Station to Atlantic City via Philly. I'd like to bring my back pack with me, so I can have my laptop, etc, but it's a bit heavy. Any idea for storage options on the Atlantic city side ? Does the station have storage lockers or does anyone have any ideas with...

Where are the other trains? Anyway to know?

I'm a pilot and a rail fan both. There are several web sites that provide location information (delayed by 5-15 minutes) on any aircraft that is on an IFR flight plan. My wife often watches my progress when I've filed IFR in my own airplane on these sites. My question is this.... is there some...

    Toilet problems on LD trains..

So, on my TE trip from Chi to Lax we had intermittent toilet problems, particularly it seemed above about 4,000 feet. I would have to constantly ring the attendant (Yevone, she was great) and she would walk down stairs and do something and viola, it would work! She told me that apparently they...

Something I noticed on the TE Safety Card...

On the safety card of the TE I noticed that they had a two level "Deluxe Sleepe"r car listed. The diagram was of a sleeper car with an upper level and lower level with ONLY bedrooms (no roomettes). Does Amtrak actually have cars like this, or did they at one time? I should have lifted the card...

    TE - Pilot??

So, I'm listening to my scanner.... They are saying there is a UP "Pilot" here. I'm guessing that is someone familiar with alternative trackage/routes or something like that? Anyone have any insight into what a Pilot is?

    The demise of the CCC?

Live from the Texas Eagle out of Chicago ... It seems that the CCC might be dead. Why do I say this: 1. The attendant is now calling it the CCD - Cross Country Diner. 2. There is a sight-seer lounge attached, and guess what, the cafe IS open in THAT car. 3. The CCD is being used fully as a...

    TE - Hows the temprature?

So, I'm heading out on my TE Chicago to Los Angeles trip tomorrow. It's gonna be hot outside. Anyone been on the TE in the last couple of weeks? Has the AC been working OK. Thought about bringing a travel fan but not sure...

    TE: No flood impacts?

I'm on the TE next week (wooo hooo) from Chicago to Los Angeles... I've looked around and see no mention that it has been impacted by flooding. Anyone know if this is an incorrect assumption?

Superliner roomettes - AC Connection available

So, I know the bedrooms have an AC outlet. Is there one in the roomettes? I've never stayed in a Roomette, so I am not sure.

How many cars are in mothballs? Vollenteer help to restore them?

So, how many cars does Amtrak have in mothballs that are restorable? Maybe they should take advantage of those of us who are Amtrak fans and get us to volunteer to help restore them to reduce costs. We would still need money for parts/etc, but we could cut the restore costs a great deal by...

Have you ever met anyone famous on an Amtrak Train?

I'm afraid I can't say that I have. Have you met anyone famous?

Your one, true, stand-out Amtrak memory

What is the one, big, stand-out memory that you have had while riding Amtrak? Mine might sound odd, but it was on the CZ .... We had boarded the train in SLC and were heading to Chicago. The train had already passed through Denver. It was late at night and I was riding in a bedroom with my...

So... where is your fav. train watching spot?

So, back when I lived in Naperville, IL. the local Metra/Amtrak station was a great place to watch the trains. The BNSF freights would be running though there full bore and you could just FEEL the power. Used to play hookey from church once in a while to watch Amtrak slide in if it was on...

Anyone else irritated at how FAR in advance you have to book

Ok, I know it's pure market economics but it drives me crazy how far out you have to book to get an affordable price on a bedroom (and to lesser degrees roomettes). I realize that it's a capacity issue, but it would be nice to be able to book the TE or EB or CS 2 months out and get an affordable...

    Will they re-use a sleeper room in-route?

Will they re-use a sleeper room in route. Say I have room C from Chicago to St. Louis on the TE. Then I get off at St. Louis. Someone boards somewhere in Arkansas bound for San Antonio. Could they also get sleeper room C or do they wait until the train terminates to clean the rooms for new...

    Crew Scheduling - Heartland Flyer

So here is a question I've been pondering. With a route like the Flyer, how do they do crew scheduling? The Flyer leaves OKC at 9:25 and gets into Ft. Worth at 12:39. Then there is an over 5 hour layover, the Flyer then leaves Ft. Worth at 5:25 and gets into OKC at 9:39. This would seem to...

Are you a LD Amtrak addict?

Are you a LD Amtrak train addict? Signs that you might be: 1. You schedule your train rides way out - say six months or more. 2. You don't really *need* to go anywhere, you just want to ride the train. 3. Every day or two you goto amtrak.com and look at the schedule for your train and...

Good Train Viewing near Chicago Union Station

I lived in Chicago and rode the commuter trains for about 3 years and I never did find a good place in the vicinity of Union Station to train watch (but I honestly didn't try that hard). Anyone know of a good place to watch the train traffic come and go there?

    Any other "continuing" services?

So, are there any other Amtrak LD trains that have a sleeper/coach that are disconnected from one train and attached to another train for continuing services to somewhere, or is the TE it?
