Your help needed for Amtrak

Once again, your e-mails and telephone calls are urgently needed to help save Amtrak.

This is a job for every railroader – not just Amtrak employees.

By helping to save Amtrak, you are also protecting Railroad Retirement’s financial solvency. This is because about $1 of every $10 that goes to fund Railroad Retirement benefits results from Amtrak employment.

On Thursday, Nov. 3, the Senate will vote on Senate Bill 1516, the Passenger Rail Investment and Improvement Act. It is part of a budget reconciliation package to be considered on the Senate floor.

We need every Democratic and Republican vote we can muster to gain passage of this bill in the Senate. Your telephone calls and e-mails to your U.S. senators – politely asking that they vote in favor of S. 1516 -- will help immensely.

S. 1516 would adequately fund the existing Amtrak -- our national intercity rail passenger network -- with $11.4 billion for six years through 2011. This is enough money to maintain Amtrak's current operations, upgrade its equipment and return Amtrak's Northeast Corridor to a state of good repair.

The legislation also includes funds to create a new grant program for states that want to add or improve intercity rail passenger service.

“We need every UTU member, their family members, their friends and their neighbors to send an e-mail or make a telephone call to their two U.S. senators asking that they vote in favor of S. 1516,” said UTU National Legislative Director James Brunkenhoefer.

"We must do this to preserve essential intercity rail passenger service, on behalf of our brothers and sisters employed by Amtrak, and to preserve the financial health of the Railroad Retirement system, which would be in jeopardy if Amtrak ceases to operate or is privatized and exempted from paying Railroad Retirement payroll taxes," Brunkenhoefer said.

To find the phone number and e-mail address of your U.S. senator, go to the UTU home page, www.utu.org.

Look to the left to the top of the red tile and left click on “Washington Updates."

Then scroll down toward the bottom of the page and left click on “Contacting the Congress.”

Then left click on your state.

The phone numbers and e-mail addresses of your two senators will appear.
