The 5 Time World Champion and always Classy San Antonio Spurs took Amtrak from NYP-PHL last night (1/02)after beating the NY Knicks upstais in Madison Square Garden.

Wonder if they had their own Cars attached to #67???

Tonight they play the 76ers in the City of Brotherly Love, but won't be taking the Cardinal and Eagle to return home to San Antonio.

If they left Philly by train, they would need a week off before

Their next scheduled game in San Antonio. But perhaps their next

Game is against the Wizards in D.C.?

Sports charters on the NEC are somewhat common. Odds are they had their own train rather than riding on/behind a regular revenue train.

Typical consist would be a handful of Amfleets, maybe a cafe, and sometimes the 9800 conference car.

Next game is at home against the Phoenix Suns on the 5th. Fun fact: Phoenix fans still hate us with a passion after a series of high intensity games that eventually saw the Spurs eliminate the Suns at the height of the Steve Nash era over a decade ago.

Makes sense. I wouldn't expect an NBA team to use a train charter if they weren't able to adjust the departure to match the team's needs.

I know I am supposed to be a Trail Blazers fan, but I'm lukewarm about them (mostly due to the owner). I have only admiration for the Spurs and Popovich! They have class!
I remember being rivals with the Trailblazers back during their Clyde Drexler era. Doesn't feel like there's been much of a rivalry since then though.

Most likely was #877. Saw a post earlier today on FB that was posted last night - "Amtrak Special No. 877 through Croydon Station at 11:45pm heading to Washington DC" Guessing it headed to DC after dropping them off in Philly.

I know the Washington Nationals take Amtrak every time they play in Philly.

Thanks Betty, that sounds like that's it!

When we heard they were taking the train, my boyfriend asked who I'd sit next to. Patty Mills, of course!

I wonder if any of them love trains like we do?

Indeed - many of the baseball teams do this one happened to be the Loser Mets leaving DC for Philly after getting beat by the Nats:

I remember scheduling a sports charter once.

The Dallas Cowboys were finishing up their preseason training wherever their training camp is, somewhere north of LA (Ventura-ish?), and were going to play a preseason game in San Diego. They were going to take a charter consist of single-level Amfleets/Horizons and the dome car (maybe a PV on the end? Can't remember), and needed a slot that would work through the largely single-track railroad in between all of the Surfliner, Metrolink and Coaster trains (so, a slight bit more complicated than departing NYP late at night).

I happened to be in Southern California for business the day the train was running, so I went down to Solana Beach to get some pictures of it passing through. However, one of the Assistant Superintendents who was "escorting" the train called me up and asked me to pick up a pack of sharpie pens from the agent in SOL and bring down to the platform when the train got in. So, I never got to get the overhead photos I was aiming for.

I never did ask what the sharpie pens were for.

He probably wanted a bunch of autographs.

Tim Donaghy had some interesting things to say about the Spurs and the officiating in that series. I remember the hit by Horry on Nash - I'm not a Phoenix fan but there was nothing classy about it.

But I'm glad the Spurs used Amtrak. Hope they paid out the wazoo.

Yeah, I'm not saying Phoenix fans don't have a right to be upset, but it's over ten years later and they're still extremely salty about it. Back in 2010 the Suns finally got their revenge by sweeping the Spurs out of the playoffs. You'd think that would have tempered their anger a bit but it doesn't seem to have had any effect. So far as I'm concerned whatever happened after that is on them.

Fair enough. The Suns aren't angels either.

I wonder how many people are in an NBA team's 'entourage'? Seems like one chartered car on a regular train should be plenty, doesn't it?

Typically about 50 people among the various players, staff, reporters, and guests. The Spurs are one of 27 NBA teams that are represented by a shared transportation agreement. Three other teams handle their own travel separately.
