The Sheraton hotel is located pretty close to the station but judging from maps I've found online that also show terrain or satellite imagery, it appears that I-64 runs overhead just north of the station. Is there an easy way to gain access across the interstate to walk to the Sheraton? I've never been to this station so I have no idea.

The Sheraton Hotel is within walking distance of the existing AMtrak station. You walk toward the new Amtrak station and cross over the Metro Link tracks, up a set of stairs and cross the steret to the Sheraton. 400 yards total walk.

The new Amtrak station is right across the street from the Sheraton. (100 yards).

The new station is finished but I think they are waiting for the track work to be completed on the platform. It should be opening in the next 2 months based on a visual inspection last week.

How close/convenient is this station/hotel to St. Louis attractions? Amtrak keeps advertising the $25 fares from CHI to STL and that's a pretty inexpensive train ride -- but will it become very expensive to get around once we get there...?...

The new station and the old station are very convenient to hotels and attractions. There is a Metrolink (lightrail) stop at the station which provides easy access to downtown (Old Courthouse, the Arch, etc.), Forest Park (zoo, art museum) and most of the things you will want to see in St. Louis.

As mentioned the Metrolink runs right next to the Amtrak station and connects with Forest Park where the Art Museum and Jefferson National Memorial are along with the Muni Opera. It has a branch that goes pretty close to the Galleria Shopping Center in Clayton. In the other direction it goes to downtown and the River front with several casinos, one on the river and the new on land complex along with the Landing entertainment district. If you wanted a nice somewhat rural ride the metro link going to Belleville or out to Scott air Force Base is a nice ride just for the fun of it.. Getting off near down town Belleville and walking to the old main street with a couple antique shops and resturants could be interesting.

I am not right in St. Louis any longer so not sure of the fares, but they are within reason of any mass transit and may have some pass options, but not sure about that.

The system's web page is HERE.

Appreciate that information! Are the Texas Eagle trains generally better for a trip this length, vs. the Lincoln Service?

For that matter, I noticed there is a White Castle a ways east of the station. Is that withing walking distance on a Texas Eagle stop?
It's at least a mile away, at 8th and Broadway (the station is on 16th Street). How fast can you walk, and how long is the stop? If you really have 'the crave' (for those of you not familiar with White Castle, that line from the commercials won't make any sense to you), there are always taxis at the station, and I'm sure a bus goes right past the area. However, it is a couple block walk to the bus stop (at least right now, until the new station is up and operational), so, you'd also have to keep that in mind. Of course, for the right price (a couple of sliders perhaps), I'd be more than willing to run to White Castle for you, provided I'm not out of town with work--LOL!!

Mmm...you know, on my next trip to STL, I might hafta take you up on that offer! (I know it wasn't directed at me, but you did post it publicly.. ;) ) Never had White Castle, so it's up to you to prove to me it lives up to its reputation!

White Castle burgers are definitely 'unique'; not sure how else to describe them. Steamed over a bed of onions, so, you get an onion taste whether you want it or not, can eat one in two or three bites, can be a tad bit soggy at times, depending on how well they get the water away after the steaming, those are the highlights (or, lowlites if you think otherwise). They're certainly not something that I would eat on a daily basis, but, once in a while, they actually are good.

Most definitely looking forward to trying one, then. (I love onions, too.) Sampling regional burgers is a hobby of mine. One that RobertF turned me on to was Crown Burgers, primarily a Utah chain (but with two locations in Denver). Delicious burgers piled high with hot pastrami. Mmm...if only I could have one now!
