I'm going to be in Kansas City (never been there) next week. Is the train station worth a visit? Anything else I should not miss? I'll only be there two days.

Yes, it is. iIam not familiar with everything that is in it, but ran upstairs about two years ago while the Southwest Chief was stopped. It is a grand old station that has been restored. I believe there is a museum and some shops in it. The main concourse leading to numerous track gates is not used for that purpose. Amtrak occupies a small portion and the two tracks used, #29 and 30, are reached by a walkway attached to the side of the building around back, with stairway and an elevator down to the platform.

There are numerous nice options for eating at KCY, and some shops, plus an interesting museum (more so for kids), as well as a big-screen theater (I don't think it's officially IMAX); also, there is an enclosed, raised walkway that will take you catty-corner over to the Crown Center complex, which has still more shopping and dining options, as well as hotels. There's a hillside waterfall just off the lobby of the (Westin?) Crown Center hotel which is kind of a fun novelty. Also across from Union Station is the recently-restored Liberty Memorial, a WWI monument with two small museums on each side of the tower - you'll see it through the big windows in the station.

Oh, away from the station there are other things to do: the Country Club Plaza is not far (short cab or bus ride), known as "America's first shopping center", and quite lovely, with fountains and Mediterranean architecture; downtown is kind of interesting, just a few blocks north of the station; there are a couple of riverfront casinos, for those into that; also lots of parks, especially nice if you're a jogger or heavy-duty walker (the zoo at Swope Park is fantastic, and open all year, at least partially); the Westport area, between the station and the Plaza has had its ups and down, but is always interesting, and historic as the "original" Kansas City, and departure point for the Overland Trail in pioneer days.

A few other places that might interest you: Negro League Baseball Museum, near 18th and Vine about 20 minutes east of downtown; Nelson-Atkins Art Museum near Country Club Plaza and one of the best art museums in the U.S.; Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art 4430 Warwick Blvd. a long way from downtown but worth the bus or cab ride.

I was there earlier this summer. Very cool place.

The station has been remodeled well! Too bad there is lots of "Sprint" advertising around though, but they paid for it.

Not too far from the station is the "new" Power and Light District which focuses on the recently opened Sprint Center. When completed, that area will have numerous restaurants, bars and such.

Great pictures. Thanks. I'm getting excited about seeing KC.
