The family, the inlaws and myself are going to Oklahoma City in July sometime to take the train to San Antonio. Couple of questions. Would it be wise to schedule our return from San Antonio on a day the East bound Sunset is not scheduled? Is the Heartland usually crowded? Is there anything to do in Fort Worth station while we wait to change trains?

I wouldn't necessarily worry too much about the Sunset causing delays to the Eagle. Now, the practice is to bus Sunset passengers to catch up to the Eagle, and add protect cars to the train in San Antonio. Also, by July, the schedule should be changed to have the Sunset run much earlier.

Depending on what day you travel, the Eagle might not even have the through cars since the SL dosen't run every day. You will have a few hours on the way down, but not much time on the way back to OKC. There are a few things you might be able to do; the Heartland Flyer website lists some of them, here is the link: Heartland Flyer

The Flyer isn't really crowded, but it can get fairly full on the weekends.

There is lots to do in Fort Worth. Go to the local transit information both in the Amtrak station for lists. There are lots of things in easy walking distance, and buses to everything right at the station.

Sundance Square is in walking distance. Its full of restaurrants and shops. Also the Market is right next to the station. You can also take a bus to the Stockyards which is also full of shops and stuff. Or you can take a different bus to the musuem district. Quite a number a fine museums to choose from.
