I knew if I took the Surfliner or Starlight often enough I'd some day see a launch vehicle erected. Today on the SpaceX complex on Vandenberg AFB I saw a Falcon 9 erect for what I find out is a Sunday January 8'th launch. Extremely cool if you're an engineer as I am.

Anyone have any experience or other knowledge of the impact to rail traffic (either) in temporal proximity to a launch or other "dangerous" event (e.g. fueling, motor test, ...)?

Launches tend to never be scheduled when a train is expected to be there, which is, more or less, the middle of the day for passenger trains. The Western Range knows where the trains are and could, theoretically, call UP to hold them off the base.

I'm sure that this has happened at some point, but I've never heard a passenger story.
