I was just reading a reply to my trip report and read through my report again.

One thing I didn't mention was on my CHI-DEN route, after boarding and the train got moving...I was riding along, looking at the sights and kept hearing music. This went on for quite some time. Pretty soon this music seemed to get louder and was a hard rock type.

Annoyed, I just stood up and turned around and said "who has the music playing?" :angry2: I wasn't very nice about it. Of course everyone looked up, the seats were not full. Finally a guy said, "huh, what music?". I said "I can hear someone's music and I don't like hearing it and I don't think everyone else does either, could whoever it is please turn it down". It was his music, he had the earbuds in but the music was still loud. He apologized, turned it down and I thanked him.

As I sat and thought about what I had done, I hoped it wouldn't cause problems with this guy. And thought probably should have used a different tone. It's really not like me to do something like this, maybe I was feeling high and mighty after the cruise

On a smoke break, there he was. I apologized to him and said it was not my intention to embarrass him but the music was loud and I could not tell where it was coming from. He said it was okay.

Later in the trip he comes walking by and points at me and says "you are the most noisy of all of us". What the heck!?

This was a smoke break and he was out there so I questioned him on what he said. He said I was very noisy, my phone beeping all of the time, my texting sounds, I did not hear this noise. I told him I was not using my phone, it was on vibrate, it was not me. It didn't seem like he believed me.

That was all that came about except I found out he was getting off in Denver too :(

My point...please make sure your sound is down on whatever you are listening to.

Another point. Don't be a me, I think telling the attendant or a conductor is a better way to go. You just don't know about people. And yes, I started it

Well, you know how not to handle a situation from now on. Lesson learned.

If the offender gets smart with a conductor/attendant, he or she, may find themselves watching the train pull away without them. its better to let officials handle the problem, because it isnt worth getting hurt over. They may not think twice about hurting you, but they may think twice about hurting an attendant. Heaven forbid, but you never know what other people are capable of these days.

Be safe on all of your travels. :)

Of course there are plenty of stories of someone complaining to an Amtrak employee about a fellow pax's loud music and the complainer basically gets told either to 'buck up' - or that there is no problem!

Personally I've witnessed many a time when someone is playing loud music (once even in the quiet car. ) and a CA or a conductor just ignore it.

Well ok then let me rephrase myself.

MOST of the time, you SHOULD be able to tell an attendant or conductor, and have the problem resolved.

Although I have been on trains where passengers think that Amtrak is BK and they have to have it their way, They want the train to be totally silent....umm not gonna happen. If you want silent, get a sleeper. Im hoping that I get to see what the difference is on Friday, as Im getting my first sleeper roomette ever.

I pretty much keep to myself, I dont bother anyone, and I follow common courtesy rules, and I generally enjoy all of my trips. I do love meeting new people though, and that is what makes Amtrak so fun.

BTW, none of my post applies to the OP, Im just stating experiences Ive had while Amtrak'ing. :)

I usually keep to myself also. This coach was very quiet, except for the music. It actually went on for some time until it became louder.

As for common courtesies, I think some people just don't know any better and some people just don't care.

If anything, maybe this guy will think about his volume the next time. :)

By the way he reacted to you with the "unfair" cell phone noise complaint, something tells me probably not.

I hope you still had a pleasant enough trip though. :)

Yeah easy does it is always best...

I have not done this, but will on my next trip - if necessary:

Complain about noisy passenger(s) after 10 pm to a car attendant. If they say "buck up" or something similar, I will make a point of thanking them as I write down the name on their nametag, the train and car number, and date and time. Then I go to the conductor with the same complaint, mentioning the attendant by name. If nothing is done now, I'll do the writing down thing, and mention those specifics when complaining to customer service later.

That is the best we can do, and should be effective in changing some policies - if there are enough documented complaints.

There have only been two instances where I now wish I had done this but didn't. In hindsight, one of them would probably have gotten me a voucher (Two coaches full of college football fans on their way to a game the next day, and they all were drunk and disorderly by noon, on the Crescent out of NOL). All the rest of my travels in coach and in sleeper have been great and I can't really complain much about crews, only a few standout bad actors. We need to be calling them in.

Best to you all.

Which reminds me, I need to invest as much money as I can in a hearing aid manufacturer.

With the way people listen to music and turn the volume up on their headphones, hearing loss is going to become a much more significant issue in the future compared to today.

I had a really great trip, obviously this annoyed me but I took care of it

In my posts and trip reports most of the negative I bring up is just put there, it didn't ruin my trip but was part of the experience.

my texting sounds, I did not hear this noise
Just out of curiosity - do you happen to have a light tone when you press the keys on your phone? Some people have this and don't realize they can turn off that sound. After a while, the person with the "loud texting" phone doesn't even realize that it is making that sound.

I was on the CZ a couple years ago and a gal was texting away and finally her daughter took her phone and silenced the sound. Hallelujah! LOL It was driving everyone bonkers.

Also - some phones that are not touch screen are just really clicky. When it is really quiet - it can be quite noticeable.

Nope, I wasn't texing or dialing but thanks.

A few years back on the EB west bound we had a near by sleeper compartment with load music repeating like a stuck record. On investigating we found it coming from the empty compartment across the aisle from us. Apparently the cd player had fallen off the table and dislodged the attached ear plugs. Unfortunatly it was our rookie car attendants roomette.

Did some one say something?

Maine Rider, thats a great idea, and I will keep that in mind from now on. Although so far in my travels all crew members have been great.

Cim: Im glad you had a great trip.

Peter: noise cancelling headphones for the win.
