While I don't expect it to happen. Monday I'm taking 642 and then connecting with 86. 642 and 86 are separate reservations. If I miss 86. What would the process be? Like I said I don't expect this to happen but if it should.

Thanks In Advance,

Steve

I am curious as to what happens when you miss a connection. I have to make a connection in Chicago.

Do they send you on a bus, put you up in a hotel?

If the reservations are not connected in the computer, I think you're SOL!

Without looking up the trains, assuming it's HAR-PHL and PHL-NWK, Amtrak may well say that your ticket says your trip ends in PHL since your ticket is only from HAR to PHL! They may not do anything except to tell you to purchase a new ticket at the current bucket!

If it's on one reservation, then it's Amtrak's responsibility. They may very well put you up in a hotel if you can't reach your destination that day.

What Steve was talking about was buying one ticket from point A to point X and another ticket from point X to point B, not buying 1 ticket from A to B connecting in X!

Thanks, I kind of figured it was a different kind of reservation then mine.

Not true at all. As long as the connection is a valid guaranteed connection, Amtrak will take care of you even if you have to separate reservations. That said, it's better if you have one reservation as that way Amtrak can easily figure out just how many people are going to miss that connection. That info is weighed into the decision on whether to hold a connecting train, consider a bus, or just put people up overnight. The more people connecting, the more likely it is that Amtrak considers holding the other train if the hold isn't for too long.

Another factor is that with etickets, missed connections are protected from auto cancellation if they are on the same reservation. If on different reservations, it's a different story.

Does this process work with multi-city tickets forced connections? i.e. something that the system doesn't show by default but that you can build segment by segment and the fare is still from point A to C (regardless of point B, where you make that "forced" connection).

If you used the multi-city function on Amtrak.com to book the trip, then everything is still on one reservation and you would be Ok provided that it's a valid connection.
