hi i'm coming from england to visit a friend in colorada springs, and i want to go to vagas for a few days as well, can't really afford the flight ,is there a better (cheaper option) way to get there, train car, bus any advice welcome thanks

There is no train service to Colorado Springs or Las Vegas, NV.

The Greyhound Bus site lists the following. There are other buses during the day, but this will show you how long it would take.

COLORADO SPRINGS, CO 05:05am

DENVER, CO 06:40am

DENVER, CO Transfer to another Bus 08:45am

GRAND JUNCTION, CO 01:05pm

GREEN RIVER, UT 03:30pm

PAROWAN, UT 07:10pm

ST GEORGE, UT 08:55pm

MESQUITE, NV 08:45pm

LAS VEGAS, NV 10:10pm

A Long Trip!!! Probably some nice scenery.

Standard Adult

$99.00

7-Day Advance Purchase Adult

$67.00

It is possible to do a train - bus combination. Maybe someone would know that schedule.

Note that the bus fares are one way. Round trip air from Colorado Springs to Las Vegas is about $200 advance purchase (America West): about the same as the standard bus fare and not that much more than the advance purchase bus fare. Fly from Denver, and air fare is lass than $150 round trip (Frontier). The plane ride is under two hours, compared to all day for the bus.

Another option is to rent a car with unlimited mileage and drive. I would expect a car rental would run $30 to $50 per day.

You CAN take Amtrak from Colorado Springs, CO to Las Vegas, Nevada for about the same price as a Greyhound-all-the-way bus trip (trust me, you do NOT really want to do the all Greyhound thing).

Here's what you would do. If you go to amtrak.com and type in COS (Colorado Springs) as your starting point and LVS (Las Vegas, NV) as your destination the system will route you correctly via Denver and Salt Lake City.

You will start by boarding a thruway motorcoach at 5:00am in Colorado Springs for a short, pleasant ride to the train station in Denver. The motorcoach will arrive in Denver at 6:25am and you will then transfer to Amtrak train 5, the westbound California Zephyr (departs Denver at 8:05am), for a scenic train ride through the Rocky Mountains with gorgeous scenery unlike any other. You will arrive into Salt Lake City, Utah at approximately 11:33pm that night, probably a couple hours late since this train tends to run late. You can hang out at the train station until 5:30am (they will remain open waiting for another train and other passengers will be there). The Amtrak agent will then give you a voucher for a free taxi ride over to the Greyhound bus station where you will board an Amtrak/Greyhound Thruway Motorcoach at 8:30am to complete your journey into Las Vegas, Nevada. The bus usually isn't crowded on this portion of the route so you should have adequate room to stretch out and sleep if you wish or just enjoy some scenery. The coach should get you into Las Vegas, NV around 3:30pm which will be perfect if you are checking into a hotel there. The bus station in Las Vegas is downtown adjacent to the Fremont Street Experience.

Amtrak offers a similar, coordinated schedule for return from Las Vegas, NV to Colorado Springs, CO if you need to take advantage of it. You can book the entire trip online at Amtrak's website or through your local travel agent and Amtrak will issue tickets for all portions of the trip: train and connecting buses. You could fly, I suppose, for a faster trip, but it would be a little more expensive and you would really miss out on some of the very best scenery the U.S. has to offer. If you do the train/bus combination you won't be disappointed when it comes to the scenery.

The OP can also take the Southwest Chief. A Thruway bus departs COS at 7:45am and arrives Raton at 10:25am. The Southwest Chief departs Raton at 10:56am and arrives into Kingman AZ at 12:46am just after midnight. Another bus departs Kingman at 12:55am and arrives Las Vegas NV at 3:40am.

The arrival time into Vegas is not the greatest, but the whole trip takes less than 24 hours.

Remember that Las Vegas is sleepless city, full of zombies playing  casinos.
Aloha

But There is so much more. The Shows there are the best in the world. The venues are state of the art. Belagio performers come and go from under water. Magic - 3 or 4 of the worlds best. Allways 15 or more major musical acts.

What I find strange with the number of people that go to Vegas from Sothern CAlifornia, why Amtrak abandoned service? I have heard several excusses but they do not add up.

Yes, that's true. Biggest obstacle is UP. If I remember correctly, there was a similiar to Fun Train, but in private, to Reno several years ago. I think the reason is lack of ridership.

I agree with you that CA Dept. of Transportation should add a route to Las Vegas, sharing the cost by both CA and NV, not Amtrak (due to lousy fed gov't). CA pays Pacific Surfliners, San Joaquins, and Capitals which all of them are very successful.

They (CA and NV) have been discussing a high speed mag-lev train for years. I moved away from Vegas in 1999, and they were talking about it then. And, obviously, it is still being talked about, with no action on it yet. Personally, having lived there, it would be a WONDERFUL thing for them to do; it would certainly alleviate some of the traffic headaches on I-15.

While it is possible to take Amtrak COS to LAS (LVS), the pricing is not very competitive. The lowest price I could force (presumably the D-bucket) was $130 one way, $260 round trip. If you cannot get the D-bucket, the fare is even more. Air is $200 round trip. Since the OP indicated that price was the driver, air seems like the best option.

Some trips lend themselves to Amtrak, and some do not. This one, in my opinion, does not.

Book the ticket online before April 30th and type in H570 as the promo code and voila, the price drops to $97.50. For that price, the trip and the accompanying scenery are a bargain! Sure, the aeroplane-can make the trip much quicker, but he (being from England) would end up missing out on one of the most scenic regions in North America.

It really comes down to priorities. Since I do not enjoy flying, I would probably opt for the faster Amtrak routing via the Southwest Chief and the cheaper fare... comes out to $75 when applying the H570 promo code to it. If I hadn't traveled through the Rockies on Amtrak's California Zephyr before I would opt for that route.

An all day bus trip, though, would only be slightly more attractive than the most costly (ugh!) rental car option where the trip would easily end up costing $200 EACH way or more by the time the car was rented and gas at $3/gallon was purchased.
