Another reason may be that people going for several months might like to take more belongings than you can fit in luggable luggage and a car is a good way of stowing abd bringing all those extras.
I'm pretty sure this is a key reason for the Autotrain's success, given all the folks who spend part of the year in the northeast, part in Florida.
 
In general, the longer your stay, the more economic sense it makes to take the train. When people take their own car with them, they are dealing with a comfortable, known vehicle instead of a rental that may or may not be what you really like.

If a new Auto Train could be operated on the Rathole south from Cincinnati, I'd be right there to ride it. Unfortunately, this would require cooperation from Norfolk Southern, who probably would be pretty determined to resist it. Getting a good routing from the Rathole to Florida might also be a problem.

Mayor Richard J. Daley (the original) and many other natives used to pronounce it Shuh Kah Guh. The A in the middle syllable is pronounce like the A in "bad".
