Why did they get rid of the inland route?

There is a significant amount of traffic metro Boston-Hartford and vv, which is the primary city pair that lost service when the inland route was cut. Ultimately, CT and MA will resolve this, but it will take several years yet.

    Dress code?

I usually am wearing a suit and tie when I board, and I will leave the tie on until after dinner. The second day probably just the shirt and trousers. A good friend with whom I've taken the EB likes to wear kitten heels on the train (she usually wears high heels, but that's a bit much for...

    Lunch departing NYC on Crescent

The scheduled departure of the southbound Crescent (train #19) from NY Penn is 2:15pm. Is there a call for lunch in the diner after departure for sleeper passengers?

    The Vermonter

FWIW, the Ethan Allen is much faster from NYC than the Vermonter. Where are you originating?

Open Letter from Dr. Vukan R. Vuchic to Secretary

Although I agree with the sentiment of your post, that the money spent specifically in Boston on highways and on rail is unequal, some of the information is inaccurate. The highway includes two underground components: the Ted Williams (3d Harbor) Tunnel and its approaches; and the depressed...

    Reply from My Congressman

Amtrak has not operated Los Angeles - Orlando on the Sunset Limited since Hurricane Katrina (eastbound service terminates at New Orleans), which makes this Congressman's response appear phony and scripted, because it is obviously dated.

can i get from colorado springs to las vagas

The OP can also take the Southwest Chief. A Thruway bus departs COS at 7:45am and arrives Raton at 10:25am. The Southwest Chief departs Raton at 10:56am and arrives into Kingman AZ at 12:46am just after midnight. Another bus departs Kingman at 12:55am and arrives Las Vegas NV at 3:40am. The...

    EB Amenities

In September Chicago-Seattle, we received cookies, a split of wine, plus the gift pack (hand lotion, CD, snack mix, etc.) from our attendant in the sleeper upon departure from Chicago. There was an upper level attendant in the sightseer lounge car on both days, along with National Park Service...

    Amtrak to Reevaluate Long-Distance Routes

Many people in New England and the Northeast do in fact want a strong national network -- both corridors and long-distance trains. (Many -- 90%+ -- of us also disapprove of this "flyover" terminology, which I had never heard anyone in New York use until the term became more common because of TV).

Amtrak will have to remove Ticket Agents

QuikTrak machines may not be vandal-proof as they are now, but there are options: (1) make them more vandal-proof; (2) lock the stations with the QuikTrak machines inside except when volunteers can be present (near train departure times); (3) ask the local police install a camera to monitor the...

Amtrak will have to remove Ticket Agents

Consider that the 450,000 per annum revenue is not intended just to maintain the window agent's FTE cost, but funds Amtrak general revenue. Also, the vast majority of that revenue can be obtained through other (lower-cost) channels, like QuikTrak, travel agents, ticket-by-phone, or internet...

Amtrak will have to remove Ticket Agents

QuikTrak machines should be placed at most stations -- staffed or unstaffed. As long as a town volunteer can lock and unlock the station, that is adequate security for these machines. If someone wants to pay cash for an Amtrak ticket, any travel agent would be glad to assist. Amtrak should...

    Autotrain

How secure are cars and minivans from scratches and small dents? I imagine that the movement of the train could cause some rubbing if the car was close to any structural part of the train car. Does Amtrak allow the car to be covered with a protective, heavy cover during the trip?

    Amtrak Routes

FL-Chicago did exist, but Amtrak is having difficulties with FL routes as it is. Cincinnati-Cleveland would be plausible, but the state of Ohio would have to pay for it.

Gunn: 'Federal goal is to scuttle Amtrak'

I just returned to NYC from DC on the Noon Acela. I was one of 3 passengers in the First car. The cost was minimally more, so I upgraded. There were two attendants handling my car. Plus three attendants in the lounge at DC. I know that the work rules are an issue for management, but moving...

    Empire Builder/ Coast Starlight seating

Two friends and I are taking the Empire Builder and then the Coast Starlight in September from Chicago to Los Angeles by way of an overnight in Seattle. Later, we will take the Sunset from Los Angeles to New Orleans. The deluxe sleepers are always looking out in one direction, as they are all...
