    First time on long distance train

    I am very claustrophobic too. I traveled in the small roomette on the same route between Nebraska and California many times, most recently last spring, with no problems. The roomette door can be left open with the curtain drawn for privacy if you want. But even when I closed the door, I was ok...

    For those in roomettes: have dinner in your room or with others

    Always the dining car for us, too. Great scenery going by, and nice conversation. Last week we were seated with the tour guide for the on-board Amtrak vacations group, then later we sat with a couple from New Jersey who told us all about their tour through the southwest and the Grand Canyon...

    Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

    My source was Amtrak: Their accommodations department called me yesterday and told me the 11th, and as I said, I am VERY glad I waited and did not cancel my trip on the 16th. They verified my entire itinerary is intact, which includes my 16th trip from Sacramento to Eugene on the 16th and my...

    Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

    Yes it is! I would still keep in touch with Amtrak as your travel dates get closer. I got different answers each time I talked to their normal customer service. The call I got was directly from their travel disruption accommodations department. Sometimes it pays to keep calling back every few...

    Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

    Good news! Just got call from Amtrak and Coast Starlight service northward from Sacramento will resume May 11. This means my entire initial itinerary is intact; no rental car in Sacramento, no driving up to Oregon, etc. I have been making other, tentative plans, but I knew I was right to wait...

    Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

    Thanks so much for posting this update! I realize it's not set in stone but it puts our minds at ease a bit about our return on the CS on the 24th from Eugene to Sac. Any further updates would be appreciated. If I weren't traveling with a child, this would be easier!

    Sacramento I-5 drive due to Coast Starlight cancellations

    Yes, I'm looking forward to it - once we are out of SAC LOL I lived in northern California for many years and I miss it. I love watching it go by on Amtrak but being able to stop and see the sights along the way won't be bad at all! It's a pretty easy drive.

    Sacramento I-5 drive due to Coast Starlight cancellations

    Thanks, I just don't understand where Amtrak is getting their date of May 18. Any idea? I can't believe they just chose an arbitrary date to stop canellations and re-start booking?

    Sacramento I-5 drive due to Coast Starlight cancellations

    Thanks, I only see the one update at their site, the one that says end of May but I will keep watching. I remember that bridge, it was beautiful.

    Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

    Thanks for the info, everyone. I really appreciate it. I plan to keep checking this thread, and I would very much appreciate anyone posting anything new they might hear, as will I. Thanks again! And a huge thank you to the Admin. Again, very much appreciated.

    Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

    Yes I saw that. I'm just wondering why Amtrak is saying the 18th. Customer Service doesn't know either. They are booking from May 18 onward. My return journey is in question.

    Sacramento I-5 drive due to Coast Starlight cancellations

    Thanks! That's very helpful info. I'm still nervous, though, because Amtrak says service will be restored May 18 whereas Union Pacific's customer web site says "end of May." Our return Amtrak trip from Eugene back down to Sac is May 24. I'm hoping Amtrak is basing their date on something more...

    Can someone tell me where this discussion was merged, as someone posted above? This is the only forum page I can find about this issue.

    Starlight Service Disruption: 4/25 through 5/9/17

    I was booked to leave Sac on the CS northbound on the 16th and get off in Eugene OR the 17th. Got an email alert just yesterday, so made alternate plans to get to Eugene out of Sacramento that mean another hotel nbight and more expensive car rental. I get it, this is not Amtrak's fault. But...

    Sacramento I-5 drive due to Coast Starlight cancellations

    Hi everyone. The Coast Starlight cancellations north of Sacramento through May 18 (at last report) due to the repairs at Redding have forced me to rent a car out of Sac northbound up to Eugene, Oregon for that leg of my trip on May 16th. Anyone know how the traffic will be around 4pm or so...

    Amtrak Delays: Zephyr---> Lakeshore

    You're going to be fine! The conductors outside the trains as you board are very helpful even when they are busy. And other passengers are, too. Don't be afraid to be assertive and ask about anything you aren't sure of. You'll soon see how it all comes together and you'll already be planning...

    Amtrak Delays: Zephyr---> Lakeshore

    Yes, good points, PVD! I forgot about that LOL

    WINDOW SEATS: If someone already said this, I didn't see it, so sorry if this is repeat info: Don't despair if you don't get a window seat when you board. People get on and off at every stop. When you give the conductor your tickets on board (unless he or she already assigned you a seat...
