This is just hypothetical question. Lets say you are booked in sleeper with a connection and you miss a connecting train. Now if the only option following day is coach or bus, can you request to wait for more days till you get your sleeper?
I guess in that case Amtrak wouldnt cover hotel...

In case there are other alternatives to your destination, rather than waiting a day in Chicago you can call the support and request your routing.
Do the agents (both at station and phone) treat paid and AGR reservation differently? I mean do paid reservation get priority over AGR reservation if the next days train has limited sleepers/seats.

How much economic activity can the government generate from operation of these trains directly and indirectly to the cities it serve?
How much $ does it cost to create a job?
