I rode the Builder in May and had 4 border agents and a dog come through our car. Just walked quickly through. I had my scanner on and could hear them clearing the cars as they walked through and then gave the train an all clear.
Thanks everyone for your help. I have returned from my trip to Kansas City. Turns out the Super Shuttle picks up at the Amtrak station if you call ahead and schedule. It was waiting for me when I arrived and took me to the airport where I met some friends. We then took the hotel shuttle...
Although I am not retired, I am a woman and have just returned from traveling alone. I was both in coach and sleeper. It is very safe. If you are on an overnight train, I recommend the sleeper also. It was a great trip and will go again!!
I am traveling from Chicago to KCY on the Southwest Chief in a few weeks. My final destination is a hotel by the airport. Does anyone know the best way to get out to the airport area? Are there taxis at the amtrak station? It looks like it is quite a distant out to the airport. Thanks for any...
I was on #6 from the 13th through the 15th. I rode with my mom from Sacramento to Chicago. We had slow orders through Iowa and arrived in Chicago a little over 2 hours late but nothing too bad. We were on time or early before hitting Iowa. Glad my ride worked out ok.

I am taking the same trip but leaving on this Saturday - National Train Day. I am bringing a scanner also. I have TomTom on my iphone and will probably use that some. My sister owns a GPS for Geocaching. I will be following this thread wondering what I should be bringing on my trip.
I am coming in on the Wolverine and leaving on the Empire Builder that day. It would be great to meet someone from here. I am new to this board and find it very helpful!
These photos are gorgeous! I am leaving for my first overnight train trip on National Train Day - Empire Builder - Coast Starlight & the California Zephyr. I can't wait to see these areas in person. Your photos make me even more excited for the trip. I can't wait!!!
Thanks for the trip report! Each time I read a report, I get more excited about my May train trip. The pictures were fun to look at also. Thanks again!
The "station" doesn't look like it did in 2002. It is now a small shelter near the tracks. Yes it looks like a bus shelter. I normally use this station when taking the train to Chicago for the weekend. There is no parking lot so you have to park on the street. The old station is now a...
