The following is a Press Release from Amtrak today.

October 21, 2004  New Weekend Reserved Regional Trains Assure Travelers Will Have a Seat on Amtrak

WASHINGTON - Beginning Nov. 1, 2004, Amtrak will require reservations on its weekend Regional trains operating on the Northeast Corridor between Boston, New York City, Washington, D.C. and Newport News, Va.

The new all-reserved status allows Amtrak to better serve its passengers as it will now be able to better monitor demand and make the proper number of train seats available for ticket holders.

"By changing our busy weekend Regional service to all-reserved, Amtrak customers will know there is space on the train for them," said Barbara Richardson, Amtrak's Vice President of Marketing and Sales.  "Historical information is used to prepare Amtrak's unreserved trains, but an unexpected high demand may result in there not being enough seats. Moving to reserved services will ensure that each ticket holder will get a seat," added Richardson.

Customers who are currently holding unreserved tickets for weekend travel after Oct. 30 may exchange those tickets for reserved tickets of the same class at no additional charge.

The change does not affect weekday Regional trains, which offer a combination of reserved and unreserved services. Keystone and Clocker service trains operating between New York and Philadelphia continue to offer unreserved service.

Smart Passes (multi-ride tickets) will continue to be accepted on most weekend trains. Those trains not accepting Smart Passes after Nov. 1, 2004 are trains: #156, #192, #87 and #135 on Sundays and #152 on Saturdays.

Are the Northeast Amtrak Passagers mad about the Regional Service Trains are now Reserved?
Probably yes for those who take the last minute purchase.

Biggest factor is to prevent from overcrowding on weekend schedule. Most people had to stand up in trains. It's probably due to safety, customer treatment, and efficiency reasons.
