As a five year old in 1964 I took a train from New Orleans to Houston. I'm pretty sure it wasn't Amtrak. Does anyone know what service it may have been?

Amtrak did not exist until 1971.

You probably rode the Sunset Limited (which we still have today on Amtrak). It was operated by the Southern Pacific Railroad. There was also a train on that route called the Argonaut, but it may have been discontinued by 1964, not sure.
