Alan can probably answer this the best but as far as I know they took the sleeper off the Boston-Albany train and made it a stub train where you have to crossover the platform to the Lake Shore Limited (which, BTW, has not had stellar on time performance in recent times). The best accomodation, in my book, is the Accessible bedroom (Room H) which anyone can buy 15 days before train departure. Other than that there are two bedrooms, A&B, that are rather nice. Depending on which way the car is turned you can wind up riding backwards in one of these rooms. The bathroom and sink take away from the space in these rooms. The accessible room takes up part of the walkway to hide the bathroom thus giving you the most room for your buck. It is also cheaper than the deluxe bedrooms. The last choice is the roomettes which are on the small side compared to the other rooms. Some people are comfortable in them and some have expressed pure disdain for them. It seems that you have to experience it for yourself. But going west to Buffalo it seems a waste of money as you will indeed get a free dinner in a Heritage diner but you will not get to experience a full night's rest unless there is a major delay(you'll scheduled to arrive around midnight). I'll let Alan fill in the gaps.

You are correct, the sleeper is gone between Albany and Boston. I believe it's now going on at least 2, maybe 3 years, since that change.

Turning to the questions above, the best accomodations between Boston and Albany now would be a business class seat. From Albany west to Buffalo, the best is a sleeper. If you want the absolute best, which basically just means you get more space, then get the bedroom. Otherwise, settle for the roomette and save the money.

If you get a sleeper, going west you would get a late (7:00 PM) dinner in the diner. All food is included, but alcohol is extra. Coming east bound you'll get lunch in the diner.

If you take one of the trains from downtown Buffalo to Albany coming home, then the best accomodations are Business Class. Business class by the way includes a nicer seat than coach, 2 & 1 seating, and you get a free non-alcoholic drink from the cafe when you show your ticket stub. You are also supposed to get a free newspaper.

Otherwise coach seats are nothing to write home about, but still have a bit more room and pitch than you'd find in an airplane. The coach seats on the Lake Shore Limited between Albany and Buffalo are better than they are on the Boston section or the regional trains that serve downtown Buffalo.

To help answer some of the rest of your questions, I'd recommend reading On Track On Line's hints & tips.
