Sometimes, Sleeper is Cheaper

For example:

This Monday 09/07/09 from Los Angeles (LAX) to San Jose (SJC) on #14 Coast Starlight

Two coach seats are in the highest bucket at $97.00 each X 2 = $194.00

Roomettes however are all priced at the lowest bucket of $95.00 per roommette. And when you buy a roommette, it throws your rail fares back to the lowest possible bucket of $49.00 each.

So, on Monday, if you buy a roommette for two people, it's $49.00 each X 2 = $98.00, plus $95.00 for the Roommette = $193.00, one dollar cheaper than the two coach seats. Plus, you get the Parlour Car and all of your meals are paid for and included!!

Its part of why Amtrak is great although its a valid example usually the buckets are not that out of line. However if they were and you saw the low bucket sleeper jump on it because you got your self quite a deal.

Many people take a sleeper between Atlanta and New Orleans (even though it is a day trip) because the cost of the sleeper is not much more - or even less - than 2 coach tickets. Especially when you figure it also includes 3 meals for 2 each! :D

We rode the LSL from BUF to NYP for $14 more in a roomette than coach fare. Can't turn something like that down!

If more that one people are traveling long distance it is always smart to compare sleeper fares to caoch and use all discounts. Though discounts don't apply to sleepers.

I wonder if this may have been due to the holiday weekend. Our train on Sunday the 6th was pretty light from SJC to Santa Barbara but then coach completely filled up with people who made the day trip to Santa Barbara and were returning to LA. I'm guessing that pushed the coach bucket up quite a bit but not the sleeper car rooms.
