I am taking 92 to WAS on 3/15/06, how often is it late, I have been keeping track for the past few days and it is even late getting to JAX. Usually it gets delayed once it leaves FL but now it looks like it leavs from S, FL late.

Any tips or info would help.

Becca

Leaves the yard late many times, also gets hit with delays from New River Construction and Tri-Rail interference.

I recently read that CSX will be doing track through the end of March and Amtrak will be adjusting schedules - reference Trains Magazine News wire for February 22 (excerpt below).

CSX says it will have three maintenance-of-way gangs working Sundays through Wednesdays on its North End Subdivision between Richmond, Va., and Rocky Mount, N.C., on Amtrak’s “A-Line” from Sunday, Feb. 26 through Wednesday, March 29. The maintenance work will affect the schedules of those three Amtrak trains, the Silver Star, Carolinian, and Palmetto.

.....

Amtrak said it will adjust the schedule of train No. 92, the Silver Star from Miami to New York, originating on Saturdays through Tuesdays, March 4-7, 11-14, 18-21 and 25-28, so it will be past the work limits before the gang removes the track from service. The train will leave Miami at its current 8:50 a.m. but bypass Tampa and run about 2 hours earlier from Kissimmee north. A bus will operate from Miami through Tampa to Winter Haven, Fla., to connect with No. 92. The trains originating Wednesdays through Fridays will operate on their regular schedule from Miami to New York, making all stops.

But this still does not effect late departures or delays en route, they're still going to happen as usual.

I understand - I should have clarified my comment.

I was just pointing out that track maintenance related schedule changes were planned and that I would expect related delays on top of those that would otherwise occur. Again - I should have clarified. :)

Therefore if I am understanding correctly, the trains on the 15th will be late because of this planned track work ?

Well they will run on their normal schedule, not the altered one. It's possible that there will be a few more slow orders through the track work area than normal becuase of the work, but there shouldn't be any crews out there on single track territory to slow things down. Now you might get some crappy meets if they're working on Double Track and they pull a track out of service, but that's up to the Dispatcher in JAX.

PLEASE tell them not to do that, I was able to secure an appt with an MD a specialist in DC. I did give myself some extra time but not 5 hours.

If I had a VERY imporrtant medical appointment 800 - 1,000 miles away and was taking Amtrak, and if I couldn't get a train that was scheduled in to the destination AT LEAST 12 hours ahead of the appointment, I'd go a day early and get an overnight hotel room at the destination. That way I wouldn't have to worry about it, because if push came to shove I would always be able to catch an airline flight even if the train got stuck partway there. It's sad to have to say that, but if it's not a pleasure trip and has a "hard" deadline, don't put yourself in the situation where you have a very real possibility of not being there in time for an extremely important appointment.

If I could afford the hotel in DC and the time off from work I would , but what I am going to do is change to 98 instead of 92, my appt is not until4 but have to check in at 3:45.

Lately the general trend has been about an hour late or so, they haven't been doing all that bad.

I don't mean to sound harsh, but this is not a very good idea!!! What are you going to do should something out of the ordinary happen on your particular trip? You should go at least a day ahead so you know you can make the appointment if it is "very" important. Otherwise you may find yourself between "a rock and a hard place!" I would be sure to be there a day ahead whether you are flying, taking a bus, driving your own car, or taking the train! Good luck...........we know "Murphy's law!" OBS...

If it is a medical appt with a specialist hundreds of miles away, I think I would worry even with an AIRLINE flight that was scheduled in 5 hours ahead of the appt. If it's important enough to travel that far for it, it's worth getting there a day early. Sure beats not getting to see the specialist after spending all that travel time, time off work, and money, simply because you were 30 minutes late. And unless you've been to that particular person's office before, it can take an extra hour or more just finding it in a strange city. Penny wise, pound foolish. Spend the extra time and money. Save the wear and tear on your nerves.
