I have booked bedroom accommodations for May of next year as soon as reservations were available. Then 8 hours later the next day the bedrooms were all sold out. This is 11 months in the future. Anyone who thinks 5 or 6 months out is safe, need to think again.

How many sleepers are there when the Sunset sleeper is attached?

Will most of the track work be completed by then?

There is 1 sleeper LAX-SAS-CHI and 2 additional LAX-SAS-NOL.

You say the bedrooms sold out on 422? If 4 more got sold, either to 4 passengers or a tour group, all 5 bedrooms available on 422 LAX-CHI or 22 SAS-CHI are sold out.

Actually there are 7 Bedrooms on a Superliner Sleeper with the H (available to anyone 2 weeks before departure if available) and Family Bedrooms Downstairs!

Travel Agents and Groups do block out Sleeping Car Space far in advance with Travel Agents even able to book before the general public!

The revenue wizards @ Amtrak have started offering Sleeping Car Rooms @ Higher Buckets 11 monrhs in advance than in the past and of course supply and demand are the reason!

That's why amsnag.net developed by one of our members is such a useful tool!

Does anyone know if it's often the case that the majority of the rooms these tour groups/travel agents book ahead of time are later dropped and available for sale to the general public by Amtrak? If so, how long before the departure date are they dropped?

I don't think anybody knows. It's up to the individual travel agencies how long they hold the rooms and when they release them. Apparently they are able to hold the rooms from before the point when actual passengers are allowed to book them.

Wonder why Amtrak does not use a 'fare search' calendar like SWA uses on their website?
