Totally confused by roomette cost listed on net. e.g. Tucson-Shreveport $311 while Chicago-Seattle $152. Seems to vary week by week. Are these costs determined by demand and season or whatever the market will bear. Coming from Australia and travelling Tucson-Shreveport for USAF reunion and then on to Chicago. Catching Empire Ltd to Seattle and then down to Los Angeles via Coast Starlight and then home. Any comments on negotiation with conductor upon boarding for unused roomette? Will be travelling in October. Thanks.

If you wanna room, it would be wise to just be safe and book it as far ahead as possible if you know the dates you are going! Worry about the cost then. A reservation doesn't cost you anything till you buy the tickets. It will cancel after a certain amount of time if you don't follow through, and Amtrak will still sell it somewhere along the line most likely. OBS...

Thank you for all your help. Got pretty good service from Joan Gray in AMTRAK international ticketing in Phila. PA.

Keep in mind if you make a reservation you have 7 days for it to be paid before it's cancelled. This grace period is there for passengers with no credit card that don't live close to a station so they can reserve a spot, then pay by cash or check on the day of travel.
