Purchasing a good US rail map

Tomorrow begins at last my first all-alone Amtrak adventure, and I'm looking forward to getting a good rail map (or at least a map that has the rails drawn) of the US, or better, state by state. Where can I find a good bookstore or mapstore around New York Penn Station? Any recommendations? Does Amtrak print its own rail atlas for sale or something?

Do you mean a map of the Amtrak system? Or something involving other routes as well?

The best atlases are the ones from Steam Powered Video. But they're only available by mail order, and somewhat pricey.

You can also look at the 1948 Rand McNally Railroad Atlas online. This was more or less the zenith of the rail system. Expect a lot of the lines shown to no longer exist.

I've got already a copy of that map, It's great, but I was looking for some higher detail, maybe not just "rail map", but "map" itself, so I can keep record of where am I, something like this:

Even a higher zoom would be great!

plus I have their south west and north west maps, they are a better scale but when I last checked, the rest of the country hasn't been issued yet.
