Very telling quote.

http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/busines...ss/15047196.htm

When he tried to explain this to Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta, Gunn said he got little response.

"It was like talking to a mannequin," Gunn said of a meeting with Mineta on June 13 last year, the only business meeting he had with Mineta during his 31/2-year term as Amtrak president. "He never showed any intellectual engagement in terms of dealing with the problem."

This can be interpreted two ways. The other way is that Mineta was dumbfounded that Gunn had, in his first two years, been given more than twice as much annual federal funding as his predecessor and the system was worse than before and Gunn is saying he needs still more money. His blank stare may have been total disbelief.

Get real.......Has Mr. Mineta ever said anything even reasonably coherent AND truthful about Amtrak? Anyone???????

Actually I have to disagree with you a bit here. Had Mr. Mineta bothered to show up at the Amtrak board meetings like he's supposed to, or had he even properly debriefed his representative at those meetings, then he would have known that things were that bad before his meeting with David Gunn.

So no, I can't buy that theory that he was shocked and stunned.

How unfortunate that the Republican Party (my party, still) has chosen not to promote rail travel in our country. Perhaps a new Republican leader might have a different perspective. Does anyone know where McCain or Giuliani stands?

McCain is virulently anti-Amtrak. I don't know about Giuliani.

It is stronger than that. If it moves on rails and carries people, Mc Cain is against it. It is is amazing that there is the start of a light rail in Pheonix, which is mostly despite the man. He did howeve manage to kill the plan to build a light rail for circulation oalong the Grand Canyon South Rim so as to reduce the number of busses shuttling the visitors.

mc cain is a primary senate voice for getting rid of amtrak. don't know about guiliani except that he is as worthless as bush
We all remember when David Gunn was in the senate comm. once and McCain told him he wanted to flat out get rid of amtrak. David Gunn responded by saying if he wanted to get rid of amtraks subsidy would he also want to get rid of Az. communter airline subisidies, when Az. citizens depend on. McCain was suprisingly caught speachless for once when debating amtrak. lol.
