Thanks, fellow rail fans, for the lively and helpful replies to my appeal, last summer, about a do-it-yourself baseball tour by train! It turned out that lots of cities have major- and minor-league ballparks that are an easy hike from the train station. And some stick their ballparks way the heck out in a suburban concrete maze. I'm looking at you, Arlington (TX) and Atlanta (GA).
New query: I'd like to explore some of the country's Presidential libraries by train. Your suggestions and reviews? I don't rule out renting a car at or near the Amtrak station, but would prefer to rely on public transit and my own two feet wherever possible. Thanks in advance.
As an aid, here's a list of Presidential libraries and their locations:
George Washington Mount Vernon, Virginia
John Adams Quincy, Massachusetts
Thomas Jefferson Charlottesville, Virginia
Abraham Lincoln Springfield, Illinois
Ulysses S. Grant Starkville, Mississippi
Rutherford Hayes Fremont, Ohio
William McKinley Canton, Ohio
Woodrow Wilson Staunton, Virginia
Calvin Coolidge Northampton, Massachusetts
Herbert Hoover West Branch, Iowa
Franklin D. Roosevelt Hyde Park, New York
Harry S. Truman Independence, Missouri
Dwight D. Eisenhower Abilene, Kansas
John F. Kennedy Boston, Massachusetts
Lyndon B. Johnson Austin, Texas
Richard Nixon Yorba Linda, California
Gerald R. Ford Grand Rapids, Michigan
Jimmy Carter Atlanta, Georgia
Ronald Reagan Simi Valley, California
George H. W. Bush College Station, Texas
Bill Clinton Little Rock, Arkansas
George W. Bush Dallas, Texas
Barack Obama Chicago, Illinois
