Seems now they are offering 20,000 points for switching to NRG. How easy is it to do? And how easy is it to cancel after some months. I am not worried about the boilerplate language about "forfeiting bonus if cancelled". That's been in every credit card rewards program and I've never seen it enforced in 20 years...

Took the plunge and signed up for it today for my parents who are in Maryland with PepCo.. In a nutshell:
  1. 20,000 Amtrak Guest Rewards points after 2 months on this plan
  2. 2 points for every $1 spent on the supply portion of your electric bill
  3. Introductory electricity supply price for 3 months
My guess/hope is that after 3 months the price is relatively stable and comparable to my current bill. But there's so many fees with these bills that makes it impossible to understand ..

People in Maryland have a choice of electric companies?

We have choices in Texas too, but the Privatly owned Outfits stick it to their Customers,( during the Big Freeze 2 years ago people received Bill's for Thousanda of Dollars!) while Government owned utilities only sent Regular Bills, and worked with those who needed help to Pay their Bills due to the damage and hardships caused by the Deep Freeze!)

I'm glad the City of Austin owns Austin Energy even though we had Major Problems during the recent Ice Storm !( not entirely the Utilities Fault!)

The offer related to my utility is only 10,000 points. Nevertheless, I'll sign up and after a couple of months when I qualify for the points I'll shop around again. Unfortunately, this is a variable rate plan guaranteed for only three months when it could go up 30%. I typically shop every three months anyway. All energy prices now are so volatile. Good news is there are no fees associated with this, or that I could see.

I've never lived in a place where the electric company wasn't a monopoly, whether public or private. I honestly didn't know there were places where multiple companies competed for residential customers.

FWIW I received this 20K NRG offer back in August and after reading the fine print, signed up for it, received the 20K after month 3 and watched my utility rate drop for about 4 months. In month 5, the rate was readjusted and exceeded what I was paying so I went ahead and canceled with NRG and went back to my old provider. This is a great way to get 20K of AGR points without breaking a sweat.... just keep your eye on your rate and make sure that you can switch back without penalty after receiving the points.

Doesn't the rate go up and down? If so curious why you cancelled after month 4 instead of waiting to see what happens over time?

Maybe I should have waited longer but I knew their rate was always going to be higher in the long run than my local provider. Their introductory rate is always lower to get you to switch and then they hope you don't want to go through the hassle of switching back.
