And... what sort of Congressional hearings and NTSB investigations will follow? Thanks to Amtrak, and transit, there are passenger travel alternatives. And the highways in NY and New England are often supplemented by safer parkways, restricted to passenger vehicles only, but of course the Merritt Pkwy. was immediately overwhelmed.
At 5:30 am Thursday May 2, a wreck on resulted in the closure of I-95 in Norwalk, CT, until about Monday. The overpass damaged and condemned was only about ten years old, and there is nothing so far to suggest a failure of infrastructure. A passenger car reportedly cut off a big rig, resulting in another rig carrying gasoline to crash.
There are no corporate executives to grill in Congress, nor bridge support engineering to consider, but perhaps fuel trucks in such critical highway areas should be limited to overnight hours. Assuming drivers maintain good sleep schedules. Another approach would be escort vehicles!
Or pipelines and freight rail. Those however are subject to the above types of discouraging scrutiny. Then again, in Norwalk on I-95, there were no injuries.
