NEWARK, N.J. -- Train service on the Northeast Corridor outside of New York City was suspended Tuesday afternoon because of police activity on the tracks.

Service was halted between Secaucus Junction and New York.

Amtrak temporarily suspended service at about 3:40 p.m. due to a discovery of a leak of an unknown substance near tracks on the New Jersey side of the Hudson River Tunnel, Amtrak officials said in a statement.

Amtrak said an investigation had begun and service would be restored as soon as possible.

Dan Stessel, a spokesman for New Jersey Transit, said police were on the tracks just east of Secaucus and trains could not run. He did not elaborate.

A drum of hydraulic fluid that had fallen off a work train was mistaken for a "suspicious substance" and the NEC was closed while the incident was investigated. A more complete story from the Morris County (NJ) Daily Record is HERE.
