NOTE ON THE "ABERDEEN SHUFFLE"

Some readers have asked why the continuing disruption of service to Aberdeen, MD at a time when there should be no interfering traffic preventing a stop there.

At times Amtrak finds it necessary, in order to move equipment around, to assign a Bombardier high speed train set (Acela Express) to that late night train that serves Aberdeen. Amtrak did not specify, and Bombardier did not include, any way to board or detrain an Acela Express train from a low level platform. Since Aberdeen lacks high level platforms, an Acela Express cannot serve that station; hence the substitution of a taxicab from Baltimore for those passengers detraining there.

Good Question. Also who is the genius who forgot the stairs for low-level platforms?

Also who is the genius who forgot the stairs for low-level platforms?
That was kind of stupid. Even though the Acela lands onto high level platforms at all the stations it stops at, how do the crews in the yard get on and off. Another flaw to the kist.

Also who is the genius who forgot the stairs for low-level platforms?
I don't think Amtrak intended for the AE to stop at any low-level platforms when they ordered the equipment. Aberdeen was never intended to be a stop for AE equipment. What they forgot was the possibility of AE trainsets substituting for conventional equipment, which the above communication suggests is the case for Train #198.

Yes, but in an emergency its going to be difficult to get in and out of it. Besides they couldn't hurt.

Amfleet, most of this is the ongoing Acela Express saga, since the full fleet has not been returned to service following the yaw damper problem discovered in August. So most of this represents substitute Metroliner or Acela Regional (Amfleet I in either case) equipment for AE trainsets.

I cannot understand the rationale behind breaking up 145/147 into a BOS-SPG-NHV and a NYP-WAS train. That of course leaves a gap between New Haven & New York, thus crowding other trains. Since the replacement trains BOS-SPG-NHV (1450 & 1470) are running on the schedule of 145 & 147 respectively, and 145 & 147 are maintaining their schedules south of New York, what's the purpose?

And those numbers bother me. OK a 4-digit number similar to the original is best, but why tack the zero onto the end? They've taken two odd numbered southbound (westbound in rail terminology) and made them even numbers, which would indicate to me a northbound (eastbound) train. How about 1145 and 1147 for the replacement shuttles in Massachusetts & Connecticut?

Well the OSB crew usually boards the train at the station, so that's not a problem. From the yard you'd only have a conductor and an engineer on the train, and most likely they are just a transfer crew not the actual operating crew. One can still climb up into the engine from a low level platform or the yard tracks.

As for evacuations, this has already been done once that I know of. It was north of New Haven, I think, and they had to bring in the fire department with ladders to take the people off.

The 1450/1470 matter is a result of necessary equipment turns. Both of these trains make convenient connections to BOS-NYP-WAS trains at New Haven.

While the numbers selected for the BOS-NHV 'stub' trains do not follow convention, the logical numbers are already assigned to other (non-public) train movements. In the scramble to get the emergency schedules in place, this was considered a relatively minor discrepancy.

All of the 'emergency' schedules will disappear after 27OCT02. The fall schedule will reflect the Acela Express situation as the 'normal' schedule.

Cbaker,

Why then, can't 145 & 147 run all the way to Washington? Seems to be that by terminating 1450 & 1470 in NHV, that leaves equipment in a place where no other trains originate or terminate, except for the Springfield-New Haven shuttles. It means that something, somewhere, has to be deadheaded every day, most likely back to Boston in order to provide the equipment for the next day's 1450 or 1470. Likewise, it appears that at least one Regional train that normally goes from Washington to Boston is terminating in New York, hence the equipment originating in NYP as 145.

Although the release says that there would be a convenient transfer between 1450 and 173 on weekdays, and between 1470 and 163 on weekends, this seems impossible. The reason is that since 145 & 147 normally run through to Washington, they would be about one hour ahead of 173 and 163 on the corridor south of New Haven to Washington. So I deduce that the wait at NHV between these emergency shuttles and the regular trains would be abour one hour.
