Does anyone know when the Miami InterModel - including the AMTRAK station - is due to open?

The Miami Intermodal Center website page for the Miami Central Station says late 2013. Looks like they actually keep their website reasonably up to date, which a lot of project websites don't. Digging a little deeper, found a May, 2012 viewgraph presentation with a recent status update of the major components of the huge MIC project. According to the presentation, the Miami Central Station is projected to open in November, 2013. A date that far out can easily slip, however. Whether Amtrak would move right away to the new station or not is another question.

The Rental Car Center, which opened in 2010, has capacity for 6,500 cars, 42 wash bays, space for 16 rental car companies, is 3.4 million square feet, and cost $395 million. Could take a while to find your rental car in a place that big!

Is the Rental car Center that opened in 2010 near the current station or are they relocating completely? I just assumed there wasn't a car rental place there, and planned on taking a cab to the airport to pick up our rental in December when we go down. (Might still be the best route for us, since we're flying out of MIA anyway, but if it's not TOO much more expensive to rent right there at the station and drop it at MIA, so much the better!

If you look at the map for the Miami Intermodal Center complex, it is located on the eastern side of the airport. The Rental Car Center, Miami Metrorail station (which opened just a couple of months ago), the Miami Central Station are all part of the Intermodal Center and are connected to the airport terminals by the MIA automated people mover. The Intermodal Center is a big $2 billion dollar project.

The Intermodal center is several miles south of the current Amtrak station at Hialeah. So if you want to rent a car at the airport, looks like you should take a cab. Although it looks as if one is willing to walk a couple of blocks and then do a transfer to a westbound Metro train, one could take the Miami Metrorail from the Hialeah station to the new airport station.

It is easiest to disembark from Amtrak in Hollywood or Ft. Lauderdale then board a Tri-Rail commuter train to the Metrorail transfer station. That way you avoid having to walk from the Miami Amtrak station over to the Tri-Rail.

Thanks-We'll just take a cab. By the time we get to Miami, we will have been on 4 separate trains over 4 full days just to get that far, and still have a drive down to the keys....since it's not far, we'll cab it to the airport, get our car, and get on across the bridge, I don't think I'll be up for yet another transfer to another train by that point! Thanks for the replies, looks like it will be a good deal once it's done and the trains arrive directly there!
