Hi all,

Did some searching on here and the Metro Plaza seems okay but it is safe for a woman to stay? I won't be walking around at night, however, I do smoke and will step outside.

Also has anyone had a super late check out there? I will be taking the Sunset Limited.

our family has stayed there several times connecting cs to swc. safe and secure as far as i can see. the walk from union station to the hotel is two well lit blocks. the hotel has always stored our bags for us without charge after we check out until train time(though with the metro lounge now in the station there is no longer a need if you are traveling sleeper) but don't know about late check out. there is a fair homeless population on the walk to the station but we have never been bothered.

I've stayed at the Metro Plaza exactly once, last May. The price is right, the neighborhood is OK, the convenience to transport is super good, the rooms are clean, the amenities are minimal.Don't sweat the checkout - it ain't a luxury hotel (meaning, they won't overcharge you for every little thing)

About late checkout -- clear your room early, then just ask the desk to hold your bags, (a $5 tip would be good)

When you see the place - this Minnesota worrywart lost my worries.

But -- there was a big dead cockroach on my bathroom floor at 6 am as I was rushing to catch the first Surfliner north.

Happens in the best places.

In short - Metro Plaza was good, respectful, safe place.

No worries

PS about smoking - many rooms at Metro Plaza have tiny balconies where you might smoke.

Great location and price, safe, nice folks run it!

As was said the Metro Lounge in Union Station is where you can leave your luggage after you check out! This gives you time to eat @ Philippe ( two blocks away) and if desired hop on the Subway right in Union Station to visit Hollywood or even take a Points run on a Surfliner!

You might also consider going downtown to the International Market,( great food!),the Garnet District and Pershing Square and check out the many unique, beautiful old old buildings! This area is gentrifying fast, lots of lofts, condos and new buildings but still lots of street characters and diversity!

Stayed at the Metro many times. Never a problem. Homeless should not be a problem. Great Mexican food next door.

Good solid Hotel that is handy to everything you need and gets the job done. But if you like to watch TV (and hopefully since you are traveling that becomes secondary) the channels are limited and they still had 480i tube sets when I last stayed there. Do venture over to Union Station after dark as it is beautifully lit up at night and worth a look. As long as you aren't prowling around when the cats are coming home, you'll be safe in that area.

I am adding this in for future. I called the Metro Plaza about balconies. It is the suites that have balconies.

It was a nice thought and thanks NW cannonbal for this tidbit.

They also have a parking garage directly off of the lobby and I saw a workout room on the second floor. Going out the back door on the second floor leads to a portion of LA's China Town.

Concerning Metro Plaza, I noticed the hotel has a 3 PM check-in time. If I arrive at 5:30 AM on the Sunset Ltd, will I have to wait until 3 PM to get into a room? I am not an experienced traveler.

You can leave your bags in the Metro Lounge @ Union Station, go eat Breakfast @_Philippe, then go by the Hotel and find out what time you can check in! All are within a few blocks of each other and there is plenty to do in LA until its time to check in!

My limited experience is that if a room is available, you may be able to check in early. At the very least, they can hold your bags for you till you can check in.

On the probably incorrect assumption you haven't checked Trip Advisor, you can see what a few hundred others say about it here: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g32655-d77829-Reviews-Metro_Plaza_Hotel-Los_Angeles_California.html They advertise a shuttle bus too - if it goes to the station that's an option if you're leery.
I do check Trip Advisor for all of my hotels, I even post reviews. I knew someone here would know the answer to my questions!

Thank you for the information.

I will also be asking for an early check in at the Metro. I think on Tripadvisor someone did get an early check in but it all depends on what the hotel has available.

I'm middle aged wheelchair using female and have stayed there many times with others or by myself. Never felt uncomfortable even very late at night. When you book, put in a note that you are coming by train (sometimes your ticket is worth 10% discount) and expected arrival/departure. They do their best to meet your needs.

I also found this note on the back of the Texas Eagle / Sunset Limited schedule:

Sleeping car passengers arriving at Los Angeles are
welcome to occupy their accommodations until 6:30
a.m.

So, that gives you another hour to rest if you arrive on schedule at 0530. I am not sure if you get breakfast though - but I bet you would if they are arriving late.

So, they now have a subway that runs from LAUS all the way to Hollywood? That's pretty handy!

No Breakfast on the Sunset Ltd. into LAX unless the train was extremely late, say 3+ Hours or more, then maybe a Limited menu for Sleeping Car pax?

While it' s true you can stay in your room until 6:30am ( Coach Pax have to de- train upon arrival!), chances are you won't be able to sleep after the stop in Pomona. After arrival into LAX there will be announcements, people will be moving around and talking etc., Red Caps picking up passengers, Commuter trains arriving, and the SCA will be wanting to strip the beds, do the trash etc.

The Metro Lounge and the various stores and cafes in Unuon Station will be open

by 6am, as will Philippe if you want a Good Breakfast!

Good to know. I've been thinking about this hotel too since it's within walking distance......will need to sleep after arriving on the Starlight next month, then need to pick up rental car next morning back at Union Station. Very convenient, to say the least!

I appreciate all the posts with information. I had booked the Metro Plaza for one night. After reading reviews over again and the posts here, thinking of the location and everything else, I just did not feel comfortable or maybe not excited to stay here. I will be on vacation! :) I'm not above staying at the Metro Plaza, it just seemed very dull. I will be spending a good amount of time at the hotel.

So...

I searched the map all up and down from Long Beach to Union Station, again, trying to find a hotel that felt vacationy but not high priced. I received an email from a travel sight with deals on hotels by the airport(LAX). I was going through the list and found the Travelodge LAX. It's an older hotel, they have a pool with gardens, they have balconies, decent reviews and a Denny's next to it. It is the same price as the Metro Plaza. Travel to Union Station will cost but the Travelodge has a free shuttle pick up and drop off from the airport. So a person could use the Fly Away bus to and from the aiport for Union Station for a low cost. I will reserve a shuttle from the hotel to Union Station. The Travelodge also offers rooms for the day at a discounted rate. It's all on their web page.

This hotel will add on costs and travel time and is certainly not as convenient as the Metro Plaza(and probably will be super noisy) but I thought I would share for another option for someone.

By the time I check out of this hotel and get to Union Station, I will still have plenty of time go to Olvera Street and eat at Philippes!

Thanks again!
