For a round trip from Cambridge Massachusetts to the Amherst suburb of North Buffalo New York, what are the most wildly luxurious accomodations that can be planned on Amtrak?...

b.

How do you plan for eating on the trip over and back?... Would it be better to bring your own prepared foods, from a Whole Foods Market for example?...

Business class from South Station to Albany, then a bedroom from Albany to Buffalo-Depew, would be the most luxurious you could do. It would also be the most expensive. For a little less luxury (read a small bedroom) you could book a roomette from Albany to Buffalo.

Buffalo Depew is south of Buffalo, and the closest that you can get to North Buffalo connecting from Mass, without first going south to NY City.

If you do book a sleeper, then all meals would be free to you in the dining car, so your only consideration might be lunch out of Boston. You could either carry on something of your own, buy something in South Station, or visit Amtrak's cafe car.

Not to nitpick...but Depew is EAST of Buffalo. Don't ask me abou the NYC borroughs though....hehehehe :)

Thank you AlanB !

c. What are the offerings?..., d. what are the qualities of the offerings?... in that dining car?... and in that cafe car?... during the trip over and during the trip back from Buffalo to Boston?... e. What are the timings to keep in mind to get the best services for the dining car?... and for the cafe car?...

Who do you tip, what are appropriate amounts and what are GOOD tips for each person you might encounter along the round trip on this Boston Buffalo rail service ?

The offerings can be found on three menus that you can access from this page. Personally I'd equate the quality to about a Denny's.

The Cafe offerings are decidedly less, mainly cold sandwiches and microwaved pizzas and hamburgers.

As for timings, the cafe car should open shortly after leaving South Station and should remain open until about a half hour prior to arrival into Albany. Diner in the dining car should be attempted as soon as you board the train from NY City, such that if the diner is full you can at least make a reservation. If you opt for a sleeper, then it is possible that your attendant could make a reservation for you. He/she will tell you if they did during boarding or shortly after they come to the room to explain how things work. If you opt for coach, then you are on your own to make a reservation in the diner.

By the way if you like you can get an idea of what the roomette looks like here and the bedroom here.

If you do take a sleeper, then I'd suggest tipping him/her around 3 bucks even though they probably won't need to make up the beds for you. If they do make a dinner reservation, I'd probably add another buck. If you do decide that you want the bed put down for a few hours of sleep, prior to your midnight arrival into Buffalo, then I'd up the tip to at least 5 bucks.

In the dining car you should try to tip 15%, but since you won't get a check at the end of the meal you'll have to try to calculate the amount in your head when you look at the menu. If you do ride in coach, then you'll get a check and it will be easy. In the cafe car, most people just throw their spare change into the cup, maybe giving a buck if the attendant is really nice and helpful or they buy a lot of food.

How about the return Buffalo Boston trip?...
Same basic stuff overall, Breakfast would be served out of Buffalo unless the train is extremely late and you would be able to get lunch in the diner before arrival into Albany. Note: that you want to eat breakfast as early as possible, since lunch could come early at around 11:00 AM if the train is close to on time.

You'd then be stuck with whatever food is available in the cafe car on your ride to Boston, unless you can hold off until you reach Boston.

Private Rail Road Cars for Charter or rent. www.aaprco.com
But know that this alternative would be quite expensive, probably on the order of at least $15,000 or more, and would require at least a month or two in advance to set up.

And keep in mind that Amtrak will need to switch the private car from the Boston-Albany stub train to the Lake Shore's main train at Albany, which is something they might not be willing to do same-day. Even so, it'd be a fun AND luxurious trip!
