As was pointed out on another board, if it costs the taxpayers $214 per passenger, based on FY04 total passenger count of slightly over 25 million, then the subsidy is $5,350,000,000. If only that were the case.

Figures don't lie, but politicians (and their paid spokespeople) certainly do.
 
Again, Mineta is just a puppet of the Bush regime where "truth" is little more than some abstract concept......... <_<
 
I'm particularly irritated by last sentence of that DoT press release. The rest of it reads like a fairly impartial article reporting on Mineta's speech. Then you hit this...

Amtrak was created by Congress in 1971 as a for-profit corporation, however it has failed to turn a profit or provide quality service.

Yes, statistics can be made to say almost anything you like, if you just present the data in the correct way.

However, knowingly choosing the wrong way, doesn't exactly make you an honest person either.
