Does anyone have an anecdote of this type of situation?

I have heard of this for years, but we spent a week in Japan a couple years ago, OK, only about 2 days in Tokyo, and never saw it happen. In fact, I was surprised at the lack of crazy crowding, but then again we have lived 14 years in Taiwan and two years in Hong Kong, so dense populations were no surprise.
