Tenth Anniversary Brings Savings for Amtrak Heartland Flyer Passengers

Celebrations of June Event Begin Now

CHICAGO, OKLAHOMA CITY and AUSTIN - Say "Happy Birthday" to the Heartland Flyer. Amtrak is offering a special discounted fare to celebrate the Heartland Flyer's 10 years of operation between Fort Worth and Oklahoma City.

Rail travelers can now purchase an adult train ticket for as little as $20 each way to ride the full route, which is 20% off the regular ticket price. Kids' fares and ticket prices between other cities on the route are even lower.

The special anniversary fare is good for travel from now through June 30, 2009, but tickets must be purchased by June 27 to qualify for the discounted price. Reservations for the discounted fare can be booked only by calling Amtrak's reservation center at 800-USA-RAIL and asking for code V206. Seating is limited and restrictions apply, so booking reservations early is strongly recommended.

The Amtrak Heartland Flyer was inaugurated June 14, 1999, with federal funds received by Oklahoma Department of Transportation (ODOT) that were designed to initiate service in areas without Amtrak trains. The Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) joined the partnership with Oklahoma and Amtrak in 2006. Approaching the 10th anniversary of the service, the trains have carried more than 636,000 passengers.

Amtrak operates the Heartland Flyer under state-funded contracts with the ODOT and TxDOT to provide daily service, with regularly scheduled stops in Norman, Purcell, Pauls Valley and Ardmore, Oklahoma and in Gainesville, Texas.

Look for more activities this summer as the route's community volunteer group, the Heartland Flyer Coalition, together with ODOT, TxDOT and Amtrak continue to honor the Heartland Flyer and its 10 years of passenger rail service in Oklahoma and Texas. Visit www.heartlandflyer.com for details of special events.

And that is right out of the Amtrak Press Mill so no rumor mills here. :)

I rode the Heartland Flyer once 4 years ago OKC-FTW. It was packed...and I mean packed. That train is very popular and glad to see this special fare deal for the 10th anniversary. Any fare deals will more than likely result in the trains being 100% filled and then some. I wonder if they may have to put an extra Superliner or high-level car on to handle the increased loads?

Yeah, its full all the time. When I was in Fort Worth on National Train Day last year, it was using 4 coaches as opposed to the normal 3. The conductor said there were 266 passengers that day. Thats more than what the Sunset Limited takes sometimes.

The Heartland Flyer averaged 111 passengers on each train last year. Each Superliner coach can hold 75, with the snack coach holding 62, so a three car train would be capable of carrying 212 passengers. So that would mean that on average they run half full.
