I board at a rural stop on the CL when returning to WAS. I've made a habit of having the Amtrak app going when at the station so I can stay in the car until a few minutes before it's due at my stop then get out and be visible on the platform.

The Conductors on the Heartland Flyer have ticket lifting down to a science; they scan your ticket when you first step aboard and then once the train is underway they stop by your seat (based on no Destination Tag showing) to make sure your ticket has lifted and to fill out a Destination Tag. And while they are doing that, they make sure you are doing alright and brief you on where Restrooms and Cafe are. Since there are no Coach Attendants they basically do double duty and do it well.
