According to reports. the long awaited improvements at Wells ME have begun, with crews beginning to clear trees from the right of way.

The Wells Area Improvement Project has 2 major elements - to extend the current passing track at Wells, currently 2 miles long, to six miles. This will increase flexibility and reduce delays due to meets with freight trains.

The second element is to add a second platform on the Southeast side of the right of way adjacent to the passing track with a pedestrian bridge to the station. This will eliminate delays when 2 trains need to make stops around the same time. Currently one train has to wait outside the station for the other to make its stop when this happens.

These improvements are also needed for the planned eventual addition of a 6th round trip.

This project is estimated to complete in Fall 2023. The project budget is $22,967,281 of which 73% is from a 2019 FRA grant, 20% from the Maine Department of Transportation, and 6.5% from Pan Am Railways.

More details on the project may be found here
