I have an Amtrak coupon for a free companion round trip travel ticket. The ticket states that "both must reserve and travel together at all times". If I get two tickets from my starting point and my companion gets on at the next stop thirty miles up the line would a conductor be understanding or would he be likely to cause me grief. The return would be the same situation as my companion would get off thirty miles early. Thanks for your opinions.

Getting off is no problem - you can always get off early. Getting on may be a different story. Many will not give you trouble if the other person boards at the next station 30 miles down the track. But they could. However if both are going to CHI with 1 boarding in WAS and the other in PGH, you probably will get challenged.
