So, I just got a little GPS (Garmin Etrex Venture Cx), and we're leaving on the Coast Starlight from Seattle in a couple of days. I was wondering if anyone knows of a downloadable file with waypoints for points of interest (stations, cool things to see, etc) along the route.

I found this:

http://waypoint.org/gps2-list109.html

which has the lat/long of all the stations, but not in a format I can translate and download to the Garmin (that I've figured out, anyway- there MAY be a way to cut-and-paste, convert it in some way to comma-separated text, and use GPSBabel to convert it to Garminspeak, but I haven't worked that out yet...). I have a program (GPSBabel) which can convert from lots of different formats to download...

I won't be able to spend the kind of concentrated effort which is needed to create such a set of waypoints myself, much as I'd like to do that and put it up for others (I'm travelling as the sole adult with my two small children), but perhaps I can manage to at least mark a few points along the way.

To follow up my own post, I found a keyhole-maps format (Google Earth) file with ALL the Amtrak stations in the US:

923 of them, which is more waypoints than my GPS will hold at a time, so I manually edited a kml file, cutting and pasting the 29 stations for the Coast Starlight, and downloaded that to my GPS.
