WE HAVE SCHEDULED A NOL - CHI TRIP NEXT MONTH (JUNE) AND ARE WONDERING ABOUT THE DELAYS WE WILL ENCOUNTER.

WE UNDERSTAND THAT THE SINKHOLE IN MEMPHIS IS CAUSING AMTRAK A BIG HEADACHE, DELAYING THE TRAIN BY STOPPING ON CSX TRACK AND BUSSING PASSENGERS TO AND FROM THESTATION.

NOW WE HEARD FROM SOMEONE OF AN INCIDENT 07 MAY, 2008 ABOUT A 2 ADDITIONAL HOUR WATER DELAY. WATER CAUSED A FAILURE OF THE #4 TRACTION MOTOR. THE PERSON SENDING THIS REPORT WAS ON BOARD AND APPARENTLY HAD A SCANNER. SO-SAID THAT

TOWARD THE END OF THE TRIP THEY COULD ONLY GET RUN 3 BEFORE SLIPPING AND TRIPPING OUT.

THEY SAID WATER SPRAY KICKED UP FROM THE TRAIN MIGHT HAVE CAUSED THIS.

OUR QUESTION: IS THERE THAT MUCH WATER (FLOODING) AROUND THE TRACKS TO CAUSE THIS ???

WITH THE HEAVY RAINS WE SOMETIMES HAVE IN SOUTH LOUISIANA WE'VE NEVER HEARD OF THIS HAPPENING.

OUR TRIP WILL BE A WEEKEND QUICK ROUND TRIP - ARRIVING 0900 SAT - LEAVING 2000 SAT. WE ARE NOW CONCERNED ABOUT THE EVEN SHORTER TIME IN CHICAGO.

We will be boarding the CONO in NOL in a few hours - when we get to CHI, I'll try to updat the forum on "how it went"

The traction motor was an isolated incident....

58 of the 9th arrived into CHI today at 9:10am...only 10 mins late. Of course they would have been almost 20 mins early if desk 2 RTC had cleared a route through Effingham BEFORE 58 got there

Also, there is now a rumor floating around that one of the repair methods they are looking into could be very simple and take only a few weeks to accomplish ...thus a new rumor date of "end of May" "beginning of June" has cropped up

*shrug* we'll see

I will be on the CONO on June 1st so I have been trying to "watch" this situation. Where do you find the rumors? I have googled, etc., cant't find more than the initial news report.

CONO was running aobut 30 minutes late yesterday evening, and arrived at CHI about 35 minutes late. Seems that the hole at Mem has very little effect.

Rumor comes from a YAHOO Group City of New Orleans that we belong to. One of the members was posting enroute from somewhere in Illinois to Chicago that day.

Understand that mechanical problems are isolated incidents, but what concerns us is high water. Don't want to be diverted to bus, this is

going to be a TRAIN trip.

Anyone with a Lousisana address should understand high water. However, most of the CNO route is not that subject to high water. The portion just south of Cairo, Illinois would be the most likely area. If necessary, the train could be detoured by way of the Edgewood Cutoff between Fulton KY and Effingham IL, but not sure whether this would be done or not, as it bypasses Carbondale.
